Feckless ?

Why do they keep using the word feckless in ways which are almost appropriate but just not quite right... does feckless mean something different in American English ?

"Pointless" is only about a 25% synonym for feckless... something nearer to a 100% synonym would be lazy or inept. But they don't use it that way in the film.

So are the film makers deliberately misusing it to say something about the characters or are they just wrong ?
