Oblivion running time

Hi,

I just watched (twice) a copy of oblivion that clocked in at 149 minutes on my machine (borrowed from a friend). Just now I went to look up more about the film on here and it says the running time is 124 minutes... Is that really the right time?? I checked again and can absolutely verify that it is exactly that long. Did I happen to watch some kind of extended or director's cut? I've found nothing more about this longer version yet. EDIT: I just saw this version up on youtube and I checked it and it's the exact same cut I saw, with the 149 minute time:

Is this the correct version/version released on blu-ray? I would like to own this longer cut if possible... Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.

Cheers!

My guess is those bootleg versions that you're referring to have been slowed down (by about 20%) in order to fool the Digital Rights Management system or something like that. I just watched the first minutes in that Youtube video and the camera movements seem abnormally slow, and Tom's voice also sounds lower-pitched (than his normal voice) and slowed down.

I'd suggest you find a subtitles file (.srt file, which give timestamps to each line of dialogue) and compare the subtitles to the dialogue in your copy; see if the delay builds up evenly throughout the movie (and not in sudden steps, which would indicate an inserted scene). Or find (non-slowed down) 3-minute clips of the movie on youtube and compare them to the same scenes in your youtube link; see if there's a considerable difference in time/clocking.

For example, consider this clip: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd0Ha2oU3nI
This scene is 175 seconds long. However, in your youtube link, the same scene happens from 28:53 to 32:23, and without any additions of imagery; so it's "magically" 35 seconds longer there. So as it turns out that scene has been stretched out in time by 35/175 = 20%. My guess is this applies to the whole movie in your copy/youtube link.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain in such detail! I did indeed check again the copy that was lent to me and you are absolutely right. I should have realized it was too good to be true.

Also to clarify, I'm actually from Southeast Asia, and whenever I go to visit family there, I sometimes run across slightly longer/alternate cuts of films. The friend who let me borrow the copy is from the same area, and his relatives recently sent a gift package which had a number of films including this one. For some reason I guess I thought maybe this was a rare extended cut that just hadn't been released in Europe and the U.S. (finding that youtube video with the same running time gave me false confidence). No doubt these both probably originate from the same master bootleg source.

Anyway, it's such a relief to have this figured out. Many thanks again for your time and help!!!!

You're welcome! And thanks for your clarification; I can understand now why you would assume that you were looking at a different (extended/alternative) cut of the movie.
