BUYER BEWARE

I was doubtful about this film, but thanks to the clever and fancy packaging, bought the dvd anyway. I watched it with a friend, and we were both hypnotized by how utterly bad this thing is. Now, I´m sure this is a part of a HUGE miniseries, because when you watch this film, you will notice that Bruce is still a baby one hour into the film. I am wondering if my disc was defective because 129 minutes into the film, it simpy ends, with no ending, no end credits, nothing. The last chapter plays on a loop. After spending 129 minutes with Bruce Lee´s family members, we get to see THE BACK OF YIP MAN`S HEAD, for about 5 seconds. Then the film ends. Before you buy this dvd, be aware that you are only getting a small part of a mini-series. The packaging is deceptively designed to suggest that this is a full-length movie. Buying this film is like buying ONE SNEAKER; it is worthless without the other one. You will be scratching your head wondering what you just watched. Anyway, do not be taken in by this scam; wait until the complete mini series is released with English subtitles. Unless of course, you want to look at a baby in diapers for 2 hours... I actually returned the dvd to the shop, and let them know that it was defective. If you bought it, good luck returning it.

You posted in the wrong board because your describing "The Legend of Bruce Lee" TV series which was a POS. The abridged DVD version you describe is actually worse than the whole series.

I don't know, but I am talking about a film called "Bruce Lee: My Brother" which I bought on dvd. By the time Bruce was older than a child the film was more than half over. There were countless, boring subplots about his aunt and all these other people that just went on forever. Around the 2 hour mark, Yip Man was finally mentioned, and i thought it might still redeem itself with some good stuff about Bruce and his teacher. Well, they showed the back of Yip Man's head for 3 seconds, and the film abruptly ended. Now this cannot be the final product! And I don't understand why mine is the only post to talk about this. what I did see was melodramatic soap opera that had the absolute worst pacing of any film i have ever seen. Yet this has a high rating on IMdB. I just don't get how anyone would not feel angry and ripped off after seeing this mess...

That's not how the film ended. The film ends with Bruce going off to america after his father feared it would be too dangerous for him to stay in Hong Kong. Then it bascially ends with text that says Bruce set out to accomplish all the things he wanted. Sounds like your DVD is either defective of a bootleg that has messed up scene sequence.

Yes, i think the dvd was defective. But still, I did manage to see %98 of the movie, and I still think it is awful. I still don't understand how so many people praised this long winded soap opera; it was such a weak and lifeless tribute to the legendary Bruce Lee.

Because the movie showed us that he had a really rough child hood, and wasn't just a rushed movied like Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.

This movie (not a mini-series) was meant to just focus on Bruce Lee's teenage years, as Robert Lee said at the beginning "this is the untold story, and family story, of Bruce." So none of his background in the US is present here. There is a short montage of him training in martial arts, but mainly it's about his life with friends and family.

If you really haven't seen any action sequences, if it's any consolation there are two fights and a big chase sequence near the end of the movie.

I dont get it; this was so sappy and melodramatic. It didn't feel like it had anything to do with Bruce lee. Maybe i need to watch it again, with this in mind. I thought it was fiction, and wasn't even sure if Bruce had a brother. But if it is an accurate description of Bruce Lee's childhodd than i would be interested to see it again.

He has two brothers, one older and one younger, as well as two sisters. His younger brother Robert wrote and produced this movie, so this is an accurate portrayal of Bruce's childhood.

Hopefully you have the complete movie and can watch the action sequences. They weren't bad (to me anyway).

The complete movie? Is it spread over 2 dvds? The dvd i watched suddenly ends, without even credits shown. I'm just wondering, is this a two-part film, and where could i get this complete version? Thanks...

It's not spread over two DVDs. The copy I have says 122 minutes, and it definitely does not end suddenly. It has end credits and everything. You probably do have a defective one. I live in California and the copy I got was from a local store.

You can try the website YesAsia.com to search for a copy, or you can try watching it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARsAHaIiqD4 (and continue watching the other parts). However, there are no English subtitles. Hopefully it works.

I enjoyed the movie, but it was like you said felt rushed. Pacing was really awkward and I wish the movie talked more about Yip Man. Isn't Yip Man like a big part of his life? I wanted to know more about it.

reply

Actually, in the movie Yip Man's assistant says Yip rarely teaches students, so I'm not sure if this is true in real life. Also, this movie just focuses on Bruce Lee in his teenage years and his life with friends and family; it's not necessarily about Bruce the kung fu superstar. And since there are many recent Yip Man movies, the producers probably didn't want to turn this into another one.

Ip Man's disciple teaches Bruce Lee, but Bruce did continue to train with IP Man.

This whole movie goes for about 2 hours. 129mins
The scene with the back of Ip mans head is about 1 hour 14 minutes into the film, so it sound like your watching a different movie or the scenes are out of order
