Why does such a show have to have a bad guy?

Especially one who strikes women? A Room with a View was also a story about the English visiting Italy. Not a nasty character in sight and yet it won the Oscar. Has BBC lost the ability to do good storytelling? Jane Austen doesn't have nasty characters like that? Yet they put some into Sanditon anyway.
