Box Office Bomb

Congratulations to the creative geniuses behind this bomb. It cost 4.5 million to make and brought in a whopping $20,300. Really.

I'm sure the film investors behind this aren't likely to invest in a film again. Non-Christians have no desire to see a film like this. This film appeals only to a small segment of the population.(See Box Office Numbers if you disagree). What a waste.

Call me a hater if you want to - but somebody needs to put some serious thought into the entertainment side of a film before making such a colossal bust.

First of all, it's an independent film and those are harder to market. Just THIS WEEK it got picked up in several states and November 4, 2011 has always been its launch date. It only had a timid box office release in Michigan and a few select theatres in the spring when it was struggling to find theatres. And, it's not about making a profit on this, it's about spreading a message.

It took Fireproof a while too. It was a Christian movie that millions ending up seeing.

reply

If the film isn't seen by folks - the message doesn't get spread. I hope this project has nothing but success. As for profitability - it IS important when it comes to building the film industry in my state.

The fact is - for whatever reasons - financially the film has bombed.

Hopefully, time will prove me wrong.

What message is that? How stupid one can be? What a joke this movie is. Filled with total hogwash based on nothing but faith. Faith is not fact.

reply

please explicitly state what you deem to be 'hogwash'? you would benefit from challenging your presuppositions at atheism-analyzed.net. that is if you're willing to be honest...

furthermore, regarding the profit margin: he who dies with the most toys, still dies. i'm sure the producers counted the cost. not everything pays paper dividends. (i do wonder what the producer's position is on this and what the intention was?) regardless, i'm thankful it was made.

for anyone else paying attention, reasons.org is a science/faith resource worth exploring...

You are correct, reasons.org is an excellent site. Another equally good site is GodAndScience.org. Reasons To Believe is a great organization of scientists, philosophers and theologians who reconcile the Bible with a concordant view. I struggled with Genesis 1 since I was 13 until over a decade later I read a book by Dr. Hugh Ross that actually made sense. I am currently auditing my third online college course by RTB.

However, the writer of this movie doesn't agree with concordists. Reverend Wells explicitly says so at 1:35:50 into the movie: "The day/age or concordist interpretation is an attempt to rationalize the Genesis story and reinterpret the words that the original authors used when they presented the six days of creation." Marc Wells (his eccentric son) immediately chimes in with the dumbest line of an otherwise well-written script saying, "There is no science to back that up." The science that 'backs up' the concordant view is MAINSTREAM cosmology that dates the universe at 13.7 billion years and the earth at 4.5 billion years.

Us concordists recognize that the Hebrew word "YOWM" can mean 'a period of time (age / epoch / eon)' as well as a '24-hour day.' To say it another way, Genesis 1 is talking about "God days" which are millions or billions of years to us. And to clarify upfront, just because we believe in an old earth/universe doesn't mean we believe in macro-evolution. You can look at RTB's site for many good articles that provide scientific reasons not to believe in macro-evolution. (Or you can take their 8 week couse like I did called "Creation vs Evolution.")

This movie uses 'time dilation' to explain the difference between the days in Genesis 1 and the record of nature. However, time dilation has been proven wrong. We can see what happened billions of years ago by looking at stars billions of light years away from us. (It has taken billions of years for the light from those stars to just now reach us.) Supernova explosions in those galaxies occur almost at the same rate (time) as do those much closer to us. (They appear slightly slower as the galaxies further from us are expanding away from us at a faster rate.) However, the flawed theory presented in this movie is GREATLY superior to Young Earth Creationism (or what they like to call 'a literal reading' of Genesis 1.) That makes no sense, whatsoever.

If you see this as a "regular" movie, it is quite strange with a l-o-n-g science lesson in the middle. If you look at it as an entertaining way for someone to present a time dilation account of Genesis 1 as well as make some excellent apologetic points concerning many issues (one of my favorites points made exposed by the movie is that people who declare 'there are no absolutes!' are making an absolute statement), then it is a GREAT movie with acting superior to many Christian movies. Although the theory of time dilation has been proven to be incorrect, this is still a thought-provoking movie containing many truths.

almost a year later - thanks for your thoughtful reply!

Atheists have no interest in challenging their presuppositions; they only listen to those who confirm their fantasies.

They know they have access to all the knowledge of the entire Internet, but they will never use it to challenge their religious pretensions. Their fantasies are too fragile and the arguments against them are too weighty, as has been demonstrated in countless debates that they have lost. They know this; this is why they hide their eyes while raising the volume of their empty rhetoric.

Atheists are hilarious in their hypocrisy. They absolutely refuse to even consider that they are the epitome of the religious narrow-mindedness they love to define. I've heard it from them countless times. "Religion is believing something for which there is no evidence."

When it's pointed out to them that the very definition of science requires observation and replication they suddenly get glassy-eyed and pretend they don't understand the point. (They expect us to believe they're qualified to argue science on a university level but can't understand dictionary definitions written for children with single digit ages--yeah, right.)

When they're told that since no one has observed or replicated the evolution they dishonestly claim is "scientific fact," then it's not scientific fact AT ALL, they obfuscate and sidestep the issue because they do not have the character or integrity to admit they've been caught in their blatant hypocrisy by being exposed for being the "blind fools" of which they are accusing others.

Now, you'll see them "answer" this with deceit and obfuscation only but never admit it's the simple truth.

Why? Because they do not love the truth; they love their religion. (Please remember that I'm using their definition of "religion."

Trying explaining that to your friends who believe in the big bang and evolution. They have this severe problem of pretending that everything they believe, which is really based on faith in the words of men who are ever learning, suddenly and inexplicably turned into fact and everything in opposition to their faith remains, not only faith, but laughably stupid faith.

Is there any rationale or reason for such pretentious self-deception? Of course not, but we're talking about atheists and evolutionists and everything they believe is based on faith in the words of men who are full of opinions and very little scientific fact, because science is observable, measurable and replicable (or repeatable). Your opinions about evolution and the origin of the universe are not science and everyone who told you they are is a liar. You have the Internet. Do what evolutionists hate to do--do some honest research and see if I'm telling you the truth.

There is a HUGE difference between the faith of people such as you and Christians. The only thing similar is the pronunciation of the word. The faith referenced in Scripture is borne of God, is tangible and can accomplish miracles, the impossible and it can also see the invisible. The faith that you and your friends have is nothing more than imaginary fantasy and brainwashing. The main reason the word is used for both is that so very many simply do not understand what Bible faith is and therefore they think it is the same kind of faith that you have--nothing but pretense.

But, again, if you want to do the research, you'll find that the evidence of genuine Bible faith around the world is so plentiful, that you don't have time, if you spent the rest of your life, investigating all the miracles, healings and even raising the dead. Incidentally, over 50 nations now have documented evidence for the raising of the dead in the name of Jesus.

If you don't understand my point, it's because you're more brainwashed than you think. To try to get a better grasp of where you've been deceived by your "friends," you might read my previous post.

If that's unappealing to you, find the scientific definition of science and correct yourself on your inconsistent use of terms.

Or don't. Atheists and evolutionists aren't known for their willingness to learn anything they don't want to hear.

reply

doesn't mean nothing because the movie only cost $5,100,000 to make which means it will get it's money back later.

reply

You would be wrong. I know several of the investors of this film who have invested in many more films since then. Sure, the movie bombed in theaters but with DVD rental Sales and TV rights, everyone involved has made a nice profit. Not that I am defending the movie... I didn't really care for it myself.

And what are you trying to prove? You're obviously someone who wasn't interested in the movie so why would you care whether it bombed or not and why would you even waste your time posting this thread?

There are movies who appeal to just about every type of person out tere. Why can't there be a movie that appeals to Christians, regardless of how small a segment they may be?

What the so-called atheists are afraid of is they're desperate to squash any reminder that God may exist. It terrifies them because they know their sins are many and they don't want to pay the price for their immoral carnal choices. They'd best get their house in order rather than waste time rabidly obsessing about Christinaity like the immoral cowards they are.

True, that! Well said!
