When she starts singing.

I like this whole movie everything was awesome. But when Kate Mara's character starts singing you can't take her seriously. She sounds like The Little Mermaid. But besides that great movie.

Yeah, her singing was out of place in a club. It had that too earnest pluckiness one associates with the Broadway stage... à la Kristin Chenoweth.

reply

It was a cabaret club though, it seemed fitting.

reply

I don't know they could have just dubbed it though. Someone with just kind of a deeper voice. Like she literally sounds like the little mermaid.

reply

It was cabaret.
I thought she sounded lovely.

..when you're "underground" you can't get an audience to Broadway or arenas.. that's why unknown singers start out in bars and clubs..

reply

Haven't listened to Jodi Benson lately, but she does have a nice, clear, Broadway soprano kind of voice, as did Kate Mara, which was perfectly appropriate for a cabaret like she's singing in at the movie's end. I LOVED it that the movie ended like that.

reply

I like the ending. But I've heard "underground" singers. They usually don't sound like that.

reply

Uh oh, we have an expert here on every underground singer ever born.

reply

She sound Broadwayish but really didn't care for it but I liked the movie anyway.

reply

I thought Sam was going to go up to her after and say, "You look pretty."

But in all seriousness, I do respect Kate Mara for having apparently recorded that scene live (from what I could gather from the credits).

reply

I've heard that Kate Mara occasionally sings the National Anthem at New York Giants games. She's a member of both the Mara and Rooney families (who own the Giants and Steelers). Can't say I was thrilled with her singing, although the worst thing about it was the banal song she performed. It would have been interesting to hear her sing one of the great standards to see how she would do.

reply

I absolutely adored the ending of the movie. I loved that it was not the type of song I was expecting, I love that it wasn't a cynical song, I love that Radnor and Mara connected at the end but that we were still left wondering what their future together - or apart - was.

OMG YES! Not that I had an issue with taking her seriously as it wasn't necessary at the end of the movie BUT she really DID sound like The Little Mermaid!

I felt like she was about to transition into "Part of Your World"! LMAO! I was actually thinking during the singing part "this really sounds like a Disney song" and you totally hit the nail on the head!

Still a great ending though!

I had the same thought too - Little Mermaid! Maybe it was the tune as well that brought to mind that particular song from TLM. I hated her voice - the bits where she held the note were so loud and sounded harsh, like screaming.
