Is Duplass just an egomaniac?

1. Duplass has Rafi calling Pete "tall guy" all the time, and I think the only character he is taller than is Ruxin.

2. He's got himself set up as the Seinfeld, what with having a new model girlfriend every week. Also, there's all these scenes where he charms them with his supposed charisma.

3. His pranks are supposed to be so clever but they're just stupid.

I'm having trouble with a patient of mine; he's a teenage drug addict who's being molested. By me.

Pete = Jerry
Jenny = Elaine
Kevin = George
Taco = Kramer
Ruxin = Newman
Andre = Uncle Leo

Agree, except Andre is obviously the George of the group. He's the short, non-stocky, half-witted bald man. And Kevin has a lot of Puddy in him.

Brilliant comparison. First thing that came to my mind when watching this show was how the creators must be huge Seinfeld/Larry David fans. So clearly similar, and so wonderfully awesome.

reply

The creators actually *did* work on Seinfeld.

Mark Duplass doesn't write any of the episodes, so I'm not sure what your point is.

This.

Nah, I think he is just as handsome as can be and talented as they can come. Not an egomaniac -- he sees himself for what he truly is.

The show definitely started going downhill around the same time Pete started introducing new smokin hot model girlfriends every week.

With Seinfeld, at least he was a successful comedian living in New York City, you could kind of suspend disbelief and roll with it.

Duplass' Pete character is right up there with Jake Johnson's Nick character on New Girl. Because.. you know, guys in their mid to late 30's who make under $60k per year are always banging a different model every week.

reply

But Nick on New Girl is charismatic in a self-deprecating way. Pete is arrogant for no reason. He's just a sociopathic jerk. Nick has a heart. Then again, maybe Nick's character would be darker if New Girl was on FXX and not a mainstream, real network.

Pete is a very intolerable character. Duplass is annoying in his speech and mannerisms and the fact that he effortlessly gets the top 1% of gorgeous women repeatedly is pathetic. At least Seinfeld was wealthy and successful on Seinfeld with a great sense of humor. Pete/Duplass have none of this.

reply

Even though duplass didn't create/write his own character as far as I know, I found him intolerable as well. The only character I disliked more might have been Jenny. It was this pathetic attempt to be a cross between Jim from the office (pranks, tricking the others) and like others said, Jerry from Seinfeld. The whole womanizing persona didn't work with his underachieving and unkempt appearance. The guy looked like a loser, plain and simple. Sure he wasn't always successful, especially in his career, but they definitely made sure you knew Pete was the one who was a step ahead in terms of mind games and apparently could get any girl he wanted in spite of looking and dressing like he rolled out of bed every episode.
