Actually quite successful for a home market animated spinoff

When I see here

That Halo Legends US DVD sales were only $8.1 million, I was initially fairly discouraged, because while it didn't adhere to canon the best it could have, the animation styles, and the specific stories told were all quite enjoyable. Especially in the cases of stories that didn't contradict any canon or introduce new Spartans like Origins, The Deul, or Prototype.

Of course, these are only North American DVD sales, they don't include international DVD sales, or North American or International Blu Ray sales, or Video On Demand rentals.

But still, it seemed pretty low, until I found a barometer for this type of straight to DVD aniated spin off. The Marvel and DC animated movies that they release directly to the home market.

Those studios continue to make more and more of those, so they must be successful in terms of whatever they cost to produce. The results were pretty encouraging.

Scrolling down here

If you scroll down far enough and you'll find North American DVD sales for all of those releases.

Out of 18 animated films released directly to the home market, only 1 had higher DVD sales than Halo Legends.

Considering that Halo Legends isn't an animated film based on some comic book character that has been around for years and years and years, I'd say outgrossing so many of it's Animated home market counterparts is pretty good.

Unless of course somehow Halo Legends had some insane price tag, which there is no reason to believe it did.
