This by far was the worst. Thats the problem with Anime and why it doesnt succeed. If I see any more halo stories like Odd man out I am for sure I wont buy it. It had too much of the fakeness of some Japanese Anime stories and the expressions. I see why Japanese Anime Industry is at its worst.

reply

im sorry my friend but im pretty sure the anime is a success whether u like it or not...

or u mean the halo anime specifically? cuz if is anime in general, is a shame u dont rlly know what ur talking about :(

about Odd, what i liked the most was "the fakeness of some Japanese Anime stories and the expressions" xD but whathever just some point of view i wanted too share as u did with yours ;)

When I was watching odd one out I felt like I was watching pokeman. I had high expectations for halo. If you have played all the games and you see the cut scenes, I expected something similar or least better animation. The animation in halo legends just plainly sucked except a few on the stories. Even Akira released over 20 years still had better quality animation. Trust me they could have afforded better animation. I dont disagree with you that anime is a success but the anime industry has suffered, Its my job to study the numbers and the number over the last 3 years sucks. Anime is in a decline and trying to lure new fans and bring back old ones is a difficult task....which Halo legends wont do from what I seen. Not to mention keep the current general anime fans interested. Now for the hard core halo fans many of them probably wont like it especially from all the posts I have seen all over the internet. Honestly I just had a high expectation but the Halo franchise. Just like live action movies, I have my favorites likes and dislikes but I judge all movies/series the same. I recently watch the Termination Salvation anime series it was good. Also I think its time for America to take the lead in anime.

reply

well i dont rlly know bout that but u might be right... about the machinima i never heard they made a terminator serie.. im going to see it cuz ive seen many other machinimas series and i rlly liked them.. alot..

but again, when i saw its rating its like i would never watch it if it wasnt because u said it was good.
wonder if the hardcore fans are the ones that doesn't like this kind of shorts..

after watching so very serious epsiodes like homecoming it was a nice breather and it was a good comic relief

your "job to study the numbers"? What job is that exactly?

Hahahaha! I love how everyone is all uproarious over "Odd One Out". I'm not a Halo fan at all or even a HUGE anime fan but I do watch the good ones and I thought it was hilarious and wacky fun. Just the fact that everyone is all mad about it makes it even funnier. Isn't it obvious? That it's a parody within a parody? It's supposed to be ridiculous and over exaggerated. It's not that hard to see. The ultra fans that are mad about nothing important, need to light'n up and just laugh, haha!

When I heard that one of the 7 stories they were telling for Halo Legends was non-canon, I thought 'whats the point? I'm sure there is some canon story worth telling'

When I heard it was going to be a self parody, I started to warm up to the idea, having a spartan numbered 1337(lEET) was a funny concept.

But it was horrible, it wasn't funny, it was stupid and cheesy, it was perhaps stupid funny, fun to make fun of, but it wasn't actually funny. And its not like it had no ammo, there is plenty to poke fun at in the halo universe, but this was just a big missed opportunity at a self parody.

Even Akira released over 20 years still had better quality animation.

That's like saying, "Even Terminator 2 that was released 20 years ago had better action than (current straight to video movie)".

I don't like Akira, but it's absurd to demand that kind quality for a straight to video anime.

I thought that 1337 was pretty funny, but it did lose momentum during the last fight scene. I think it's also absurd to say that's it's like "Pokemon". Considering that I don't remember them having real slapstick in that series, and nor did they have DBZ/KoF style fights. JESUS.

It sounds like almost everyone in this thread is pulling *beep* completely out of their asses.

I just thought it was the wrong way to go when considering a Halo parody, I love the work of Toei and the animation work they did for the short...I'd love to see them tackle a serious story in the future.

I thought it was really funny, not like "Arby 'n' chief" on youtube but a humour that fit an anime (Team Rocket in pockémon, anyone?). I love Halo, and I loved 1337 just because he was the perfect parody of the hard, superior spartans!
Way to go 1337, wish to see more of you're hillarious adventures in the future :)

It was anime style humor, but the thing is, Halo is a Western product, so I think it would've meshed better had they had Americans write it perhaps or if the comedy didn't have such (like you mentioned) Japanese/anime bent to it.

Humor is one of the most difficult things to translate from culture to culture. As a long time anime viewer, I can tell you that in my opinion, I think the anime that are most effective are usually action or drama. Comedy in some cases, but not all.

When it comes to animation meant for teens/adults that supposed to funny in America, you want to look more along the lines of The Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy, something like that (Family Guy not so much...it's not in league w/the other two). Our humor tends to be a bit more irreverent and sarcastic, whereas Japanese animated humor seems to me to generally take a more innocent, slapstick/child-like route.

In general, Odd One Out had a few clever bits, and the character of 1337 (a clever name) was indeed funny, but the superpowered kids and some of the other moments in it were really corny and uneeded. Odd One Out was appropriately named (hell, maybe even on purpose) because it sticks out like a sore thumb, sandwiched between the rest of the episodes that actually had some great drama, action, and storytelling in them.
On top of being a totally different genre than the rest, it didn't have any subtlety and didn't tell much of a story (a Spartan and some superpowered kids against an Electric Space Monkey?) and seemed childish amidst a product meant for a slightly older set.
....Maybe a 12 year olds and under would like it, it was from the director of DBZ, and I stopped liking that after I got a bit older..

I have to agree with most of what you say, I really found the superkids just strange, and so the "mother/AI". I really liked the idea of seeing the AI/her physical shape but no, just some voiceacting and nothing. Maybe the kids were superpowerd to again show how bad the 1337 was, even kids could do better?
Anyhow I liked the beginning, and the last part, I totally agree that the kids and the AI were stange and unnecessary in my eyes.
I would love to see more of 1337's adventures, but again maybe with some more Western humor, maybe 1337 fumbling into a covenant base, unleashing the flood or something that suits Michelangelo from TMNT, I mean 1337 of course ;)

indeed this one was so incredibly stupid that is was funny.

This was perhaps one of the worst Halo related things I've ever come across.

Unless it was one of those arty films that was meant to be rubbish in an ironic sense.

I enjoyed this short in particular, and I realize that some people are split on the debate of the "funny" side of Halo and the serious side. I am a huge Halo fan, and part of that can be attributed to vast universe of Halo and all the point of views it can be presented in. In my opinion the story of Halo is a beautiful tale of human sacrifice and epic battles between the UNSC/Spartans, Covenant, and flood. Stories such as Homecoming, The Prototype,The Babysitter, and Reach's campaign bring a personal and emotional side of Halo to the viewer, but at the same time I can appreciate how easily Halo can be interpreted as humorous in other interpretations such as Red vs Blue (which I love) and Odd One Out. Just my 2 cents!

reply

I liked it as well.

People laugh at Grunts all the time so it is not like humor is totally alien to the Halo-verse so like why not add a parody as well.

I actually felt like I was watching an episode of Dragon Ball Z: Halo edition. It was a big lol moment for me, the battle scene and all.
