'Cosmopolis' vs. 'Antiviral'

I thiought this was a very interesting topic for a discussion thread on here as I've seen plenty of Cronenberg fans kind of dismiss "Cosmopolis" as one of his lesser works, while really praising his sons forray into resurrecting David's early body horror fetishes and themes in "Antiviral". For me, "Cosmopolis" is by far the better film; it's simply so incredible on so many levels; the detachment of the "1% percent" people, the pain of people from both sides of the capital side, making two thirds of the movie almost as a novel on screen - albeit a very beautifully Cronenbergian visual one. Then when the last third of the movie comie, which takes place outside of the limo and is very strong on all accounts is absolutely cathartic for both the viewer and Erick Packer - and probably for Benno as well. I admit it took me a second or perhaps even a third one before it really hit me how great it actually is, and the score by Howard Score and Metric (with a beautiful song by K'Naan) is something that I not only thoroughly enjoy meshing with the movies cinematography, but also a soundtrack that I quite often listen to from front-to-back. I also have to say that, although as much as I love Cronenberg's three prior movies to this one, this is the most Cronenbergian feeling movie the great Canadian director has made since "eXistenz" and "Crash" - though I'd argure that this is a better film than "eXistenZ" (but not "Crash" however).

I also find the comparision inviting since they both were completed around the same time and one would imagine both directors took quite a lot of advice on small to big things on various aspects from each other on both movies. Furthermore they both competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes festival 2012 - I don't quite remember all the movies that were featured in that line-up. But being that I think that Michael Haneke is quite the overrated director (save for the masterpiece "The White Ribbon"), I would actually would've liked seeing "Cosmopolis" winning at least some of the more prestigious awards - Grand Jury Special Prize or even the Palme d'Or.

Now "Antiviral" was a cool film, don't get me wrong, I did like it and I would give it a 3/5 rating (albeit a not very strong one) but I felt the story had too little meat-and-bone on it, the characters were very well played but they didn't really keep me that interested. It had some really nice touches, and while Brandon is on the right track I think it's a long time before he is on his father's level of brilliance. If "Antiviral" had been a David film, for me it would be the bottom of his output - with the probably exception of "Scanners" and "Fast Company" - the only Cronenberg films I really don't care for (like "Cosmopolis" many of his films like "eXistenz" has grown with repeated viewings and I've seen all of his movies at least three times - at least the ones from "Videodrome" (which is where I think he became a really superb director) and onward. So what do y'all think?

Right now, I wouldn't rewatch any. Not bad movies, but very dense to want to sit through any at this moment. So... I prefer the body horror, but somehow I think I could take more from a second rewatch of Cosmopolis.
