Great idea and production values but poor execution

Shame this could have been really good but as the main reviewer has pointed out it just petered out at the end.

The whole story had a good premise but failed in its execution due to a slow lugubrious buildup with poor character interaction and the main protagonists poor acting ability hampering the storyline further - great villain and production values reminiscent of 13 ghosts and others and could have spawned a sequel if it had the right story writers and directors on board.
Average 5/10.

Spoilers found below beware

Agree with some disagree with some.

Yes, the story line was refreshingly new and different and I see where they took huge risks with the story.

I thought the protagonist was AWESOME!!!

Love that horrors not afraid 1. spell out everything and 2. end without a hollywood happy ending

I also thought the antagonist was cheesy. There was nothing frightening, menacing, creepy, threatening, or otherwise about him just an old funny looking miscast man.

I believe they also miss the boat to offer something half and half or full. Meaning...? They could have gone scary or disturbing, or a little of both. I felt we got neither.

I felt the appropriate course with the storyline was more of a Silent Hill or The Cell (j-Lo) direction

Or scary like fatal frame (video game)

All in all I would recommend everyone (horror enthusiast) to view it but I feel as though it was a dud but the potential for this was limitless...

reply

Yes but the point is the antagonist was ordinary and innocuous and thats what was more frightening as you didnt really know what he was capable of - they went a different way with him and didnt go down the old stereotype menacing , evil , deadly - cmon are you really saying the female leads acting was good? No no no just NO!!!!

lol

Yes. Honestly she was easy on the eyes (helpful, not necessary)

and after the whole dick tracey thing stopped she was good. I honestly thought she did a good job.

The old guy just reminded me of the elderly. I wanted to hug and help him :)

Again the film wasn't good for many reasons. But I don't think it was the fault of the actress. Really a lot of things felt out of place. I can really go down the line and itemize them but trying not to cast a dark cloud over the film.

I respect it for the attempt but overall it fell flat. Much wasted potential. I would still recommend it to all die hard horror fans because of the risks and the ambition behind it.

Any recommendations? I love risky, films they dont have to be "good" I give everything a chance.

Try BLOOD ORANGE - Iggy pop is in it and he is magic!
Some great canadian films out at the moment - try NUMB its awesome.

SEA OF TREES - Brilliant!

As for horror its few and far between - slim pickins and dont BREATHE wasnt that good imho although all the hype engines and social media will tell you its brilliant.

If you have time try WOLF CREEK the series its mesmerising - the photography is some of the best ive ever seen and the acting is top class - as you are into the female leads the one in this is stunning in her acting and her looks!

Hope that helps you find some decent viewing.

OH and cant wait for Peter Jacksons next movie apparently he has always wanted to make a Zombie movie - should be good!

Fran [Walsh], who is PJ’s wife and writes with him, they’ve come up with this idea called The Christ Must Die in which Nazi zombies go back in time to stop Jesus from being born.

Sounds a bit crap if you ask me!

What is this Nazi zombie niche? Seems a bit... too specific 😂
How would they pitch it? 'it's like Terminator, but with zombies... and *cough*Jesus'
'Sorry, what was that last bit? Jesus? Sold!'

What a surprise. It is by Bousman, after all. How this man ever has a career is beyond me. SAW suffered from the same problems...good idea, poor execution. Bousman is a hack with a capital H.

reply

Yes and no - SAW was just awesome it blew me away and ushered in a new style of Horror - it was clever and well shot and one of the best horrors of recent decades imho

He has this thing called The Tension Experience which is about to release...for real? I guess it's about to start. If you are interested, you can check out My Haunt Life podcast.

It's a shill for a fake ARG, and a wrap-around for a narrative that isn't happening to anybody.

It's well produced and a fun listen, and they do cover some actual haunts, but you will figure out that the podcast is part of the project long before the 'conclusion'...which opens directly into The Tension Experience: Ascension.

The timing of the podcast, the amount of coverage to Tension (90 percent), it's super fake. It's 6 people simulating an ARG experience, and also covering the fake ARG...and also curating the narrative of the ARG.

Brilliant...too lazy to make an ARG for your event? Just fake one.
