I agree with this statement.

Don't bother buying it on DVD. It's absolutely terrible.

The mixture of Japanese/English dialogue totally pi55ed me off.

The actresses clearly couldn't speak English and sounded like they were just speaking it phonetically. That would've been tolerable if they weren't wearing masks for 90% of the movie which meant you couldn't hear a word they were saying.

You would need subtitles even for the English speaking bits... not that you'd really want to listen to their cheesy cliche'd lines anyways..

Also, it's mind bogglingly boring at times where you just look at bleak scenery (wide open deserts).

I love computer games and the Japanese movie scene in general... but not even I could defend this.

Yeah i did watch it last night by a friend and didn't know anything about this movie ... we ended up making constant jokes about the terrible cinematography, the terrible dialogue and actors, the boring (and not atmospheric), endlessly stretched and repeated scenes. A terrible movie, but my friend and i agreed that maybe for a little fan film and people who doesn't know anything about film it isn't to bad.

Then the credits kicked in and the letters: "A film by Mamoru Oshii." Oh boy, my jaw dropped to the floor.

I will order the DVD when it becomes available. Despite any issues I had with the movie the unusual subject matter covered in this live action film was a treat for me.

reply

Yes, I too enjoyed it.

According to hkflix.com, it's being released on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 19, 2010. They're accepting pre-orders now.

you can get it on Amazon. There's a couple sellers that have the all-region DVD from Japan. I bought it, and it's fine. As people have noted it was filmed in English (mistake). For $13 plus shipping, its worth seeing.

I purchased the Region 1 DVD for only six bucks at a cheapo mom'n'pop retail outlet called Shoppers' World in Central New Jersey.
