Very disappointing from a pro-feminist perspective

At first it seems like a movie that's great for women and especially Hollywood women. It was written by women, started women, was about women, etc. However, sadly, once you view it.... womp womp. :( .... it propels negative stereotypes about women not getting along with each other, perpetuates the myth that women get attached to men they sleep with and then act desperate for those men, and feeds insecurities about body image. Probably one of the most disappointing female lead films in a while, and this is sadly the one we all point to to prove that female lead movies can be high earning and win an Oscar, etc. Just proves that as long as women are willing to be self deprecating, our work can be accepted mainstream.

I'd rather see a movie that is accurate and funny than something that pretends to be something it isn't. I'm a male but loved this movie. I think it portrays woman quite well, and so does every women I know that has seen it. You say they are negative stereotypes, but I have met women like this all over. I would say it's accurate but not in a negative way. There is a reason it is at classic status for many women - they can relate.

How it's not negative is beyond me. Their behavior, especially Wig's, is cringe-inducing. But if these are the role models of the women you surround yourself with, I guess your outlook might be a bit clouded.

reply

yes, it shows women are deceiving conniving bitches....... it's a realistic portrait, that is why it was a hit and new woke movies bomb, because they tell lies and portrait every woman as a hero and a mary sue.

tom8 hit the nail on the head there. I'd rather see something realistic and let's face it, some stereotypes exist for a reason. Nothing wrong with laughing at them from time to time. The animosity between Annie and Helen was hilarious.

34 year old female here....totally relate and totally thought this was hilarious. Why can't we just take a comedy for what it is? It's solely for entertainment and 'tis!

If you can relate to their behavior at all, stay classy.

You come across as a soulless, uptight, sex starved beatch. I bet you have hairy armpits and muff.

reply

Yea a bad movie that is meant to show "strong funny women".
Stereotypical story, the jokes are overdone.

my thoughts exactly..

and I love Kristen Wiig

I think the whole point is that as much as people might not want to admit it, everything this movie portrays about women is often true and is a part of our humanity whether we like it or not. The feminist movement is bullshit bc it in fact pathologizes the female essence. It's NOT a "myth" that "women get attached to men they sleep with and then act desperate for those men", are you kidding me, this happens all the time. Women are wired to be more attachment-seeking, social conditioning pathologizes this and makes it wrong, and then "feminism" tries to force women into being less attachment-seeking and more like men are wired, which is to be more independent. There is nothing wrong w any of that innate wiring, but we MAKE it into something wrong.

Fully agreed.

The characters in this movie are all them complicated and flawed... and lovable. You can notice how the movie loves its character and don't need them to be perfect. And that makes these character feel real.

Modern feminism only accepts women that follow their strict blueprint. If a woman is not like that blueprint says she should be, then she's not good enough. Women in this movie? They're not good enough neither. How does that defend women???

I was happy to see a movie made about female friendships, but really, I didn't like this movie.

Because I didn't like any of the characters in it. Yes, they're believable as real women, but not very likeable or interesting women. And they weren't very funny.

reply

You can never please a feminist. They'll always find something to moan about.

reply

Ummm, didn't they all triumph in the end? Wasn't there healing, mutual respect, and love in the end? It is interesting what some supposed "feminists" can distill out of a movie with selective amnesia at work.

People are flawed. These characters were interesting, real, and funny. I loved this movie. 8/10

You are obviously not the Target audience. You are blessed and lead a really cool life. As a negative thinker I love it.
