Extinct?

OK, I'm watching this movie right now, and they keep saying these Goblin Sharks are supposed to be extinct. I just checked and...they are not extinct, nor were they thought to be extinct. They've been known to be alive since the late 1800s.

They are rarely seen/encountered as they tend to stay near the sea bottom so little is known of their actual population but theyve been caught in nets all over the world so they're not considered endangered.

So the idea these are a presumed-extinct "prehistoric" species of great scientific value is false and saying they are extint and rare in the same sentence was just bad script-writing (something far from rare in this movie).

I dont think Barb said they were the same species as Great Whites (which would be silly as that would make them Great Whites), she said they were Lamniformes which is the same Order as Great Whites so that part was actually correct. In fact, other than the extinct/rare part, I thought most of what she said about them was generally true.
