John Voight the best FDR there was

he nailed it on the otherwise crappy movie PH

reply

too bad his political beliefs are opposite to FDR. He is a republican.

Voight was okay. I much prefer the performance of Len Cariou, who played President Roosevelt in the HBO film "Into the Storm".

The scene in "Pearl Harbor" when FDR, without assistance, stands on his polio-withered legs to inspire his Cabinet is one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes in all of cinema.

reply

Don't agree. He was a decent mimic, but lacked FDR's larger-than-life vitality, warmth, charisma and joie de vivre. I didn't have the feeling that he really "got" FDR at all.

reply

I prefer the Edward Herrmann and Ralph Bellamy portrayals.

I agree about Herrmann and Bellamy. I think they have done the best so far.

Robert Vaughn was also good in his one man play about Roosevelt.

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.

Bellamy got it perfect.

reply

I liked Hermann. Didn't see Bellamy.

Voight's performance was for a more fictitious FDR!

Its that man again!!

For me the best Roosevelt (though I haven't seen many) was Dan O'Herlihy in MacArthur. His appearance, his voice, his mannerisms-all spot-on. Come to think of it, all the appearances of the historical figures in that movie were well-done.
