Need Help! Can use PS2 GH5 on PS3?

Important question:
I was just given the PS2 Guitar Hero 5 bundle (guitar and game) for Christmas.
However, I have a PS3.
I already know that the software won't be compatible with my PS3 so I'm going to have to return it somehow.
Question is, should I return the whole bundle, or should I just return the software, get PS3 software, and keep the guitar?
More accurately, I know I can't work with the software, but can I still use the guitar? Will a PS2 Guitar Hero 5 guitar still work fine on a PS3 if I acquire the PS3 software? Is there even any difference between a PS2 and a PS3 guitar controller for Guitar Hero 5?

Please advise ASAP.
