Did Joan's adultery ruin her character?

She wasnt wearing a ring thru out so I figured they'd just articulate that she was divorced. When she dropped it that she was married with kids....and then just lets the audience know she has affairs at this convention ever year...that totally killed the sentimental vibe that had been building when Tim and Joan first meet.

Why would the director put that in?

It was bad enough to put the over the top and useless house party scene in...but the movie just died when it turned out Joan was married IMO.

the movie is about tims journey out of his sheltered life in Wisconsin. He thinks the world is perfect because he probably never left Brown Valley. Now that he went to Cedar Rapids, his character has grown now for the better. He is no longer naive and can see the world for what it truly is. A horrible place filled with adultery, divorce and bribery. Joan's character is just there to drive that point home. In no way were we supposed to feel they were gonna end up together

If time is not true, what purpose have watchmakers?

I travel to industry trade shows quite often and I can verify that this is really common. There's very much a "what happens in ______ stays in _______" mentality. So in essence, the filmmakers painted a pretty accurate picture of the vibe at these events.

This movie being a loose "coming of age" tale, had to have a lost love.

He falls for her, finds out she is married and I believe that scene was the beginning of his descent into depression and realization that the world isn't made up of gumdrops and lollipops.
