When the kidnapper feeds the critic food laced with bella donna he exclaims that the critic should have been able to discern the presence of that toxic herb.

Who eats bella donna? How would anyone know what it tastes like if it's not something that is commonly consumed?

What a gaping bit of nonsense.

The point wasn't that the critic could recognise the taste of Belladonna.

It was that he would know the difference between two dishes, one made with mulberries (I think) and the other with Belladonna.
