I can see pre-production in this movie and the main problem they faced...Aquaman is well, kind of not too manly, on the effeminate side of the super-hero spectrum. The solution? The lead will be a very large, extra-macho-man who would scare your average Hell's Angel.
Although his acting was fine, I think they went a little overboard with the choice. As the leader of a biker gang--very good!, as Aquaman well....
Dude, it is not possible to make Jason Momoa appear effeminate. You could dress him up in a pink tutu and put little girls' foofy barrettes in his hair and bring in some male strippers to dance around him... and he'd STILL seem the epitome of studly heterosexual manliness!!
Come to think of it, are they considering him for the role of James Bond? Bond has to be played by someone who could look butch in a glitter-bombed tutu.
My thoughts were same as yours before release. Overcompensating. Image rebuild. Yada yada yada. But the execution was on point. They nailed it. This truly felt like a displaced king waiting to claim his destiny. Haha, maybe that's how all bikers feel!
