Aquaman's financial success is well earned

For Aquaman to not be certified fresh by now on Rottentomatoes. Of the 327 reviewers 209 have given Aquaman a Fresh rating. Yes, it is FRESH.

Yes, yes the top critics have it at 50% which is NOT certified fresh but the rating is for overall which indeed is still at 64%. Ralph Wrecks the Internet has much fewer overall reviewers and yes a higher number of Fresh reviews at 198.

Aquaman's Box Office numbers are outstanding.

Okay why isn't Aquaman certified fresh yet????

Hasn't Warner/DC suffered enough?

reply

Because its DC.

It's at 64%, which is fresh. The audience score is pretty decent at 80%. It's not Wonder Woman but it's not BvS, either.

Yes it is currently fresh but Rottentomatoes does this little formal process of Certification:

What is Certified Fresh:?

Certified Fresh status is a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. In order to qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:
A steady Tomatometer score of 75% or higher.
At least five reviews from Top Critics.
Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews.
Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each must have a minimum of 20 reviews.
A movie or TV show that reaches the requirements for Certified Fresh doesn't immediately receive the designation. Instead, it is automatically flagged for our staff's consideration. Once the team can determine that it's unlikely the score will drop below the minimum requirements, they will mark it Certified Fresh.
If the Tomatometer score drops below 70%, then the movie or TV show will lose its Certified Fresh status.

It's just odd that the process of Certification is moving so slowly given the number of reviews that are currently in play and the number of reviewers that might still review Aquaman. The odds are that any remaining reviewers are not going to rate Aquaman favorably to move the percentage higher. That is odd as Aquaman has so far been well received.

Are there any movies with a 60-something percent rating on RT that are certified fresh? I’m having trouble finding one, especially any recent releases.

Idk but it seems clear to me that Aquaman needed to keep a steady rating of 75% (which it dropped quickly after more reviews started pouring in) for it to be certified fresh in the first place.

So, yeah. Perhaps you’ll get ‘em next time on the always hard to please Rotten Tomatoes, DCEU! :) At least you still have Wonder Woman.

reply

It's not a movie but The Punisher show on Netflix only has about a 62% approval rating and it's certified fresh.

reply

Rated fresh is equal to or greater than 60%.

Certified fresh is equal to or greater than 75%.

I think Punisher the Netflix series for Season 1 is at 66%. Fresh but not Certified Fresh.

I am in error thinking that more reviews for Aquaman would continue to come in after the release of the film. As an example Wonder Woman has 410 reviews and reviews continued to come in for Wonder Woman as late as Dec of 2018 when the movie was released to theaters in June of 2017. The math doesn't support Aquaman currently getting a Certified Fresh and there is no Skullduggery afoot but it seemed like it had more positive critical buzz going for it which is clearly not the case.

Aquaman has garnered 305 reviews so there are possibly a TON of reviews that it still could get and my thinking was that the vast majority could/would/should probably be Fresh. Again probably a bad assessment on my part.

DC's Justice League had ~350 reviews but of course the 211 rotten didn't help Justice League. Rotten tomatoes doesn't have a certified rotten but JL could get that designation. :-)

If they tried to invade the surface world, wouldn't Superman make light work of them?

Being that Superman is both an illegal immigrant and a REAL illegal alien he probably would side with the Atlanteans as well as the Amazonians.

Plus Americans haven't treated him too special.

It kinda lacks conflict and a narrative. We can't really compare RT scores when it comes to DC and Marvel because RT always rates MCU movies highly. Ant-Man and Wasp is 88%? Ok, sure. So DC kind of has to pull a rabbit out of its hat and do something that showcases a narrative and conflict such as Wonder Woman who is a fish out of water who thought the world was good vs evil only to be hit with the reality that the world is way more nuanced than that. Aquaman may quite literally be a fish out of water but there really is no conflict to the story. The conflict is a generic family crisis with so and so evil guy having the throne that deserves to be overthrown. It's a fun movie but doesn't really say anything. I thought Venom was fun and deserved at least somewhere in the 55% but it didn't even make 30%. So I don't think 60 or 65% for Aquaman is really that much of an unfair shake all things considered for a non-MCU movie.

Rottentomatoes doesn't GIVE a rating to any movie. RT is an aggregate site of individual reviewers and as such your are suggesting that their is collusion amongst an entire group of reviewers either PRO Disney/Marvel or ANTI Warner/DC which doesn't explain Wonder Woman getting a positive review aggregate of 93%.

For what purpose would over 400 reviewers decide to collectively and allegedly reward Marvel and then punish DC because of Narrative and Conflict?

The 60% to 65% is the percentage of Reviewers that rated Aquaman Fresh. Their average rating though was 60% which is what you agree with regardless. The so-called Top critics are 50/50 and rated Aquaman at 54%. If you eradicated all of the Top Critics (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA) from Aquaman's reviewers the rating goes up to ~67% which does kind of show that 38 Top critics are weighing down Aquaman 19/19 Fresh versus Rotten.

I still thought that positive word of mouth and the fact that Aquaman is a fun movie would enable it to garner a larger share of Fresh scores for the late reviewers but as of the last 10 reviews that have come in by date it has been 7/3 Fresh versus Rotten which ain't helping move that rating to Certified. :-(

reply

I know it's an aggregate, but for whatever reason, RT critics are kinder to MCU films.

reply

It’s not hard to figure out why: the critics are paid by Disney/Marvel! *eye roll*

Nah, it’s simply a case of MCU films being far less flawed and the majority of them are not only better than the DCEU’s output but even the “average” entries tend to be simply... good. Ergo, critics are kinder to them. Plus, Marvel putting out more worthwhile films than DC is something even ubiased critics (those that don’t have a preference for either Marvel or DC — scrape that, some ADMIT to being more DC fans) have consistently acknowledged. The Marvel Cinematic Universe basically set the bar high and their track-record is impressive. They’ve earned their respect.

Saying this will only spark the fanboy war, so that’s where I’ll leave things.

reply

I see it as more of a "road movie." The journey is the point of the movie. And I loved it.

reply

Professional critics are out of touch with reality.

Anyone that uses rottentomatoes to determine whether or not to watch a movie, is an idiot!
