Please explain the outcome of the 'adultery' trial

I don't quite understand the verdict: Hill 'won', but the fine Garrow had to pay was about as minimal as possible. Was this a sort of 'split judgement', not the rousing victory and public shaming that Hill had intended?

My take on this: Hill had been exposed as an adulterer himself, so the damages he could get were limited,because his reputation had also been tainted.

His attempt to ruin Garrow had failed.
