Mr Southouse

What did he say to Lady Sarah when he was dying? I heard him say something that sounded like "Your son, take him...." but I couldn't make out the rest, even though I played it back several times.

Yes, it sounded like that's what he said to me - he came to the conclusion the law wouldn't help her so she should just help herself.

reply

That's all I heard, too.

(Also, just a heads-up that the "spoiler police" will probably go off on you for posting a spoiler in the subject line.)

reply

You're right. Can't be too careful. I have edited my post!

I thought he said "take your son" because he had made sure that Sir Arthur was infected with gaol fever, (the long handshake while he was eating fruit) and wanted to make sure the boy was safely away.

reply

I had wondered that too about the handshake, but noticed he didn't keep his distance from Garrow or Lady Sarah which might indicate he hadn't given much thought to the spread of infection. I'm not sure how much they understood about infection control then.

reply

I've just read up about gaol fever, and today it is called Epidemic Typhus and is spread by body lice. Doubtful it could be passed to another by a handshake.

Lawrence, we're going to need considerably bigger buns!

"Garrow will be Garrow" („most himself and honest“)

I was sad to see Southouse leave the series. I really like Alun Armstrong.
