I liked it more than I should have

I've had this sitting on my shelf for a while now and finally and the time to give the movie a proper watch.

If I wasn't such a childhood fan of the series and this movie wasn't as true to the series as it was I probably wouldn't have liked it as much as I did but I am and it was so regardless of it's overacting, sometimes bad pacing, and awkward introduction of characters I still was able to look past all that and enjoy the movie as an excellent tribute to fond memory of my childhood.

Part of the charm is the way it does not take itself too seriously-- like the way the old captain rolled his eyes after the new captain gave his mtv style "pep talk"...

So anyone who enjoys old-school space-opera will probably be able to enjoy it for what it is-- the science is unrealistic but largely self-consistent, the story and characters are broad and melo-drammatic, but they never went for gritty realism to begin with...

If only the Star Wars prequels had stayed true to its genre like this film did-- but that requires a kind of balance or nuance in script-writing and directing... you know, more Babylon 5 (self-referential/deprecating) than Battlestar Galactica (too grimy) or Star Trek (too clean).

If you care enough to go around telling people you don't care... you obviously care.

In its somewhat cheesy, derivative way, it certainly possesses a fair degree of undeniable charm.🐭
