I really wanted to like it...

I remember watching Star Blazers back when it aired in syndication in the US. One day while browsing YouTube for Star Blazers videos, I stumbled across this;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1Ug4sCxfdM

I realized that it was a fan-made trailer since I recognized scenes from the new Battlestar Galactica, but I figured that the footage of the Yamato lifting off and the space battles had to have been taken from a real movie. So I went out and found a copy of this movie.

Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that none of the ship scenes in that video were actually in the movie. Apparently all the CGI footage was taken from a Pachinko machine. There's more space battle action in that one minute+ clip than the entire damn movie!

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against character driven movies, but everything they do takes frigging forever! Just launching the ship takes like 10-15 minutes of the movie. It may be realistic, but realism doesn't always make the most riveting drama.

At the end, when the weapon is launched toward Earth, there's no sense of urgency whatsoever. They all stand around talking about it, there's an extended farewell scene, etc. I timed it once and I think from the time of the launch until he actually gets the ship moving was over ten minutes! He and his love interest probably could have gone for a quickie, had a couple burgers, recorded a message to their future children and still had time enough to stop the aliens.

I really wanted to like this film, but it was so slow moving that I spent 90% of the movie just waiting for something to happen.
