One thing that bugs me

I know they need to drag it out to make a show. But with every single fish that Jeremy looks for, you can find what he's looking for on google or bing in less than 1 minute. And that's just going off of the few vague bits of info given within 10 minutes of an episode.

I tried that with the 5/12/13 Lamprey episode. Lake Champlain, blood suckers....the results were all for Lamprey. Jeremy Wade is a respected guy in in his field. Yet the evidence that is given to him, he can't figure out what the hell it is he is looking for? Even though I or someone else can figure it out in less than 1 minute?

You're really comparing the show to the fact that you hopped on Google and typed in a few words? He's not fishing on Google, he's using his own knowledge and experiences to track down the fish. You also have to remember, different cultures and countries have different names for fish than what we might call them. Sorry kid, Google is not a form of education.

reply

I didn't say it was a form of education but it is a source of education. Sure different cultures and countries have different names for different fish. But again, you go on google, type in the names Wade is presented with and you will get results about what kind of fish it is. He goes into an investigation like he doesn't have a clue. It's his own investigation where the end result is something that everyone already knows about or could know about.

In a recent episode he states that many remote villages are far removed from the internet and he has to speak to the locals for fishing tips. I don't think there was much info about the Goliath Tigerfish on the internet before he caught one.

reply

Exactly, or the episode in Australia about the shark that was close to the Bull Shark where the first one was discovered in 2002 and they believe there are only 250 of them world wide. The one Wade caught was the first one ever filmed. Wade takes the approach as police detective solving a murder. To do that, you have to go to the scene of the crime, talk to witnesses, speak with the locals, talk with the medical examiner who seen the injuries, etc.

Try actually getting out from behind your computer, get the microwave burrito out of your mouth and go fishing, but for real, not on Xbox.

You're kind of comparing apples and oranges here. He's using HIS OWN knowledge and experiences to track down these fish. He's not letting the Internet do it for him. No offense, but there is a HUGE difference between having the knowledge to fish for these animals, vs being able to hop on Google. Could he use the Internet? Sure. However, what is he actually learning by doing that? Nothing. Just bc you thought you were smart enough to hop on Google and type in a few words, doesn't mean you've educated yourself. Jeremy hunts for these animals using his own personal knowledge and experience, and local resources. Not the Internet. The fact that you even try say that all he could have done was punched a few words into Google, shows how little you know about anything educational.

As with the sea lampreys they're supposed to be an invasive species but the Natives having been eating them for quite some time and developed a way of catching them by hand on the waterfalls. None of this is in wikiipeda.

reply

O come on.

I'm sure he knows beforehand exactly what fish he is going to see, based on research and his own experience.

He's not really finding everything out "on the spot".

The whole setup with the reports of locals and his detectivework where he eliminates other possibilities, that's all just for the show.

It's a formula that's entertaining for the viewers but also gives him the chance to talk about some other fish that live in the same place, making the scope of the episode a little broader than just one species of fish.

What makes me annoyed is that he never catches sh!t. He catches some termite and is like "See! Here's proof the biggie is still out there" then never catches sh!t.

"Well, we didn't catch the Skrankor, but we caught this huge Stankor in the same area we were searching. Ain't that some *beep* And here's this above-normal sized Skrannkor, so yikes and butt!"

If you wanna see a real river monster, look at, like... some joke about someone's hillbilly grandma. Thanks folks, good night, I'll die here.

What do you want him to do? Drain the river?
Yes! I want him to drain all the rivers in the world. And then drain the oceans. I wonder where the water would go then?

down the drain

i think he knows when he edits the show lol

ahahahhaa wow your are brilliant i ROFL'd so hard now

he is telling a story get it ?

reply

They pretty much have to edit the episodes the way they do. It makes for TV.

I respect Wade as an ichthyologist and scientist, but some of the stuff is silly. The more he plays up how dangerous these 'monsters' are, the less credible he seems. The science is interesting enough.

Imagining Giant salamanders inhaling children is laughable, but their natural history is fascinating. The same goes for Lamprey eels and most of the other fish he features.

I'm a civilian, I'm not a trout

reply

It's the design of the show, not Jeremy's lack of knowledge, I think it's justified as the mystery aspect is entertaining. While the Lamprey was more obvious to some many aren't.

PS If you didn't guess it was a Lamprey in the first place why did you spoil the surprise by Googling it?

reply

Jeremy is using the scientific method. He may or may not have a pre-conceived idea, but he goes into the field to take samples, weigh them and check their lengths. He is also examining the surrounding fauna to see if it could support a
river monster.

I was taught how to fish by my father. I know what gear Jeremy Wade uses as I was taught perfectly well, which to use.

Also how to control your boat and line.

You must sample the field, instead of relying on possible outdated or mistaken data on wikipedia.

That is how I was taught to fish.

The expression is what is running this season.

"What is TRUTH?"
