Is this a series or not?

While most award shows combine their categories for limited series and TV movies, some separate them. SHERLOCK has won in both fields, making me doubt about what it actually is. I guess it makes sense for the episodes to be considered movies since they all last over an hour. However, does that mean this doesn't count as a limited series? Is JESSE STONE a limited series or a group of TV movies?

"The Abominable Bride" was a one-off episode, not part of the usual three-episode "Sherlock" seasons, so it was considered a TV movie. Having said that, the "Masterpiece" shows have been moving around Emmy categories in recent years as ATAS has changed its rules back and forth trying to deal with the new world of series that have anywhere from three to 13 episodes.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure individual episodes have always been considered part of the TV Movie category at the Emmys and Golden Globes. Granted, the categories are labelled as such to include miniseries as well, but a series of Sherlock is never nominated in its entirety; rather, they pick one episode each year. This would lead me to believe that, at 90 minutes in length, a single episode is considered a TV movie.

Jesse Stone is definitely a group of movies. I think it matters how many different stories and hours of entertainment are established in the contract for production.
