I like the movies for several reasons. Firstly, I'm a 240 lbs bodybuilder and I love action films, superhero movies, and all of that business. My favorite films are film noir crime movies because I like gritty reality and tragic stories.
Anyway, I also like novels and continuing stories. During the 1940s there were many film series about all kinds of characters. I admire this one series, but didn't like it, called Andy Hardy. It started out about a character by that name from the time he was a kid to an adult and many were made.
I used to watch them on Sundays with my mom. By the time you've seen a bunch of them, you get Andy and know his life story. They were corny but still there was good development.
Meanwhile, I love English writing due to the fact they invest a lot in clever dialogue. So, Bridget Jones tends to supply that along with the continuing story idea of a serial. So, even if you don't care after you watch the films, you get that she's kind of realish and is trying to make it in life, and unless you're a moron, you have to care a little.
It's nice to care about a character. Characters can be like virtual friends, you can learn from them, etc.
Also, there's something film noirish about the movies too. The idea in film noir is that good people come to a city and just cannot make it, they can't win, because cities are unnatural and corrupt. Bridget is in a comedy version of that to a degree. She is a real sweetheart and is constantly exposed to types of people who don't understand that. She can't get along or get the basic things she needs although she deserves everything in the world that's nice.
So, there's lots of way to look at a movie like this and I'm sure it appeals to people on my many levels. As a man, I like to challenge myself and not just say "chick flick" because that's moronic, but rather I like to see WHY a "chick flicK" is a chick flick. Why do women like it, am I capable of liking it, and so on.

Interesting viewpoint and well spoken, I might add.
I'm a fan of many genres of film and what you said about the label of chick flick make sense in that how can you call a movie a chick flick if men like that particular movie.
But on the flip side of that coin, there are a few that try to intentionally alienate and exclude them from it or insult the intelligence of them in order to bring them in which is why I mentioned Working Title because they do not resort to exclusion or insults and their movies are embrace by men and women alike. Unfortunately, they're moved away from that recently.

Yes, as I mentioned, I'm all in for the superhero movies because as a kid I dreamed of them and I'm supporting all of them that come out. However, I also long for witty films about literally any subject and I like crime films.
Lately, I saw a film with Kate Beckinsale called Love & friendship which was a Jane Austin comedy about a female sociopath type. The dialogue was very witty and awesome at times and I really enjoyed it.
Basically, I like whatever is stimulating and there's lots of ways to be stimulated by movies. It's too bad that Hollywood isn't branching out a bit with the stories. Some of these films, like I just mentioned, as almost all dialogue and have to be cheap to make. So, I guess it's just laziness or greed at work.
Batman makes a billion in a week, and a small film can cost 20 mil, which is NOTHING compared to the profits generated by like one big movie.

You may be all in for superhero movies but I'm not. Fatigue has set in for me and I avoid them now and will not support them.
