The airplanes at the airshow.

The two airplanes at the airshow appeared to me to be a post WWI vintage. Does anyone know what types of plane they were and when they were in production?

Not sure they were doing such fancy maneuvers prior to WWI either, were they?

Plus they talked of parachutes, yet did they really use parachutes in the first years of the war? Don't think so.

They're not French, probably the American Boeing-Stearman PT-13, or -17, -19 or -21 Kaydet, a military trainer used by the USAAC in the late 1930s and throughout WW2. The French certainly did not use them, since none were exported to Europe at this time. After the war, however, thousands of government surplus Stearmans were available for sale to the general public. Many of them found their way to air shows and were used as crop dusters, etc..

You often see them used in period films, often inaccurately, because they are a design that originated in the 1930s but are still in flyable condition and lovingly looked after by private owners; hence, they are ideal as aircraft that look the part.

The film is set in 1939, definitely not WW1, as is debated on this board.

No it's clearly not, though I agree that some of the fashions and technology depicted (the planes) are anachronistic to the time setting of the film. There is no mention of Nazi occupation or Vichy government and I doubt whether Felipe would be allowed to return so publically to the 1940 - 41 Provence region of France as a minor kind of war hero, as we see in this film.🐭
