I really like Kad Merad, but casting him as Felipe...

Merad was about 47 I believe. How old was Felipe supposed to be in the novel?

I'm not sure about the book, but in the 1940 movie, which was directed by the author, he is also around the same age as he is in the remake.

The French love their ugly men and their beautiful women. The rest of can only scratch our heads.

Yes, definitely. This really bothers me too. He's way too old for her, and even her older sister. Maybe this huge age difference is okay for the countryside French during this period? But, still... I think it's a bit hard to swallow and an annoying point for the movie.

They did the same thing with the Angelique remake. They cast an actor in his 60's as Joffrey de Peyrac. 60's! While Angelique was barely 20. They ruined me very favorite movie romance.

What's wrong with the French? Are they TRYING to lose their female audience?
