I think the moral commentary in this movie is groundbreaking and makes it great. Sure there is a lot of violence, but it's actually (kind of) an anti-snuff movie. What are your thoughts? Why do people love watching death scenes? Why do movies like Saw and Hostel thrive? There is a sick pleasure for some, but what about the rest of those who can't stop watching? I think this movie nails the answer in the Host's dialogue and visuals. Excellent.
Depending on our own upbringing many of us are "hardened" or "desensitized" to 'normal' violence. We see car crashes, a man slapping slapping his wife or beating his kid, R-rated movies on TV, etc., everyday.
Movies like "Saw" and "Hostel" offer some excitement to fans who have already "seen everything". Sure, "SAW" pretty much doesn't even HAVE a plot, but that's not why people are watching it. We need some sort of eye candy in our lives.
It's human nature to be aggressive and I think films like these are a good substitute for REAL violence for those that find a thrill in watching the extreme.
Although many of these films have been deemed "hard to watch", I'll bet there are more people out there that actually like it more than they let on.
I, for one, will take "story" over "gore" any day, and that's why I liked "Murder Collection" better than "August Underground". However, the violence was there in BOTH films.
