Mondo is back!

I'm the first to admit that I don't like the AUGUST UNDERGROUND films. Sure, they serve their purpose - to look like real snuff tapes...but where's the plot? The story? The ACTING? The intrigue? It gets a little old watching someone get cut up and skinned alive while they scream in pain for 20 minutes. I agree there is a lot of talent in making death look real - but that's REALLY the only thing I felt those films had going for them. This one was different. A LOT DIFFERENT. Growing up watching all those forbidden tapes like "Faces of Death", "Mondo Cane", "Amazing, Shocking Asia" and "Traces of Death" I have to say I really enjoyed this flick.

What I really liked about it is that it was ALL faked. It's too easy to insert random gory "news" footage or show the same famous executions over and over. Toe Tag brought this often overlooked horror sub genre onto new ground. It seems they brought with them what they learned making the AUGUST films and applied it full-force, proving they can make a REAL, suspense-building horror film, while still sticking to their roots. The effects were amazing and believable, the senerios were chilling and nail-biting and the whole structure of the film was a fresh take on an old formula.

This film is highly entertaining, yet also still educational...much like the often faked "Faces" films. It's built like an anthology film, but full of the excitement of seeing something you've never seen in "real life". I especially like the way they chose to "Host" the segments. The eerie, well-edited segments added just the right touch - to give you that feeling that what you are watching something not meant to be seen by the public.

Everyone has to start somewhere and AUGUST UNDERGROUND is proof of that. But this film is TOE TAG'S true achievement.

I felt this was a unique horror film and I hope the guys (and gals) at TOE TAG churn out a few more. Mondo is back!
