Charlie Brooker is Wasted on This

Only one episode so far, but I'm not holding out much hope for an improvement.

It wasn't awful, it just didn't gel.

I think it may have worked better with teams, but I don't suppose they could afford the fees. They could at least book people with some sort of comedy back ground. Poor, lost Jamelia was valueless.

Brooker actually made a good host, I thought. And the disturbing clips from Deadliest Warriors (Taliban vs IRA) will stay with me for a long time. But there wasn't enough bile flicked at The One Show. I wanted to see the painfully bland Bleakley (the radio controlled clone that only eats cress... and the white bits of radishes) taken down.

When we have a selection of purest-gold Wipes, why make this cheap filler? I don't think Brooker is going to find a more mainstream audience with this. And it'll only frustrate the fans.

Wrong again! Episode 2 worked really rather well. If they keep that up, it should get me through these dark, Wipeless days.

Neither episode has worked for me, even the Brooker VTs in ep 2 felt bland and almost trying not to be too mean.

Signa...? No, we use Chip and PIN now.

I agree, watching Charlie chuckling away with, of all people, Frank Bloody Skinner didn't seem right at all. It's telling that Frank was actually the funniest guest too (who the hell was the 15-year-old girl in Ep2? Did they find her in a comedy youth group and just push her on stage? I have no idea who the older woman with the scary face was, but she wasn't funny). I love Charlie, I think he's one of the best comic talents in the UK and his criticism and writing are amazing, but this is not suited for him, wheel out Jimmy Carr and just let Brooker get on with writing a follow-up to Dead Set or some more Screenwipe, please. It's just frustrating as I have no desire to watch shows like this, but because Charlie is involved I feel kind of compelled to watch it, even though normally I'd steer well clear.

Right. Well, I have to - I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

reply

I have no idea who the girl from the youth club was either but the other woman was Grace Dent who contributes to Screenwipe and is a fellow Guardian Weekend reviewer, particularly good on crappy soaps. I laughed a quite a lot as well as dropping my jaw in silence at the unbelievable ITN Jacko Vs Diana funeral piece which was excellent Brooker terrain.

reply

Although ITN weren't the first to compare the deaths of Jacko and Diana. Jimmy Carr did this on the first "8 out of 10 cats" after MJ died.
" What do I feel about Michael Jackson dying? I couldnt give a *beep* Same as when Diana died."

Although a the news organisation of the primary commercial channel should show greater probity than a comedian on a late night topical quiz.

reply

They couldnt afford Jimmy Carr, nor would he do it. Sean Lock might have if they arent renewing "TV Heaven, Telly Hell".
Frank Skinner will turn up anywhere nowadays, he's burnt his boats with so many TV people and his sitcoms have failed. Has he done The One Show yet?

reply

Quite bad this, very bad actually.

reply

The clips and Brooker's comments of some awful shows are funny. However there's only so many truly shockingly bad shows and ranting about them wears thin after a while.

reply

Really wanted Charlie to mention Battlestar when talking about Torchwood.

It's worth watching, anyway.

reply

Worth watching, episode 2 was definitely a step up on the last one.

It's not a perfect format, but let's face it, there's feck-all else on a Wednesday night.

Just a painted face on a trip down suicide row

Boyle has been on three times but he is their best host, Brooker and Boyle work well. Last night when they were discussing Danny Dyer was brilliant, 'I would of used a bike chain'

When discussing members of the public paying to have dates with celebs, Charlie Brooker asked Frank which celeb he would go on a date with. Frank looked shocked and then laughed "Its not going that badly is it?".

Probably Frank thought it was an ideal way to meet women who were into him. Plus make some extra cash.

reply

The knives seem to be out for Frank Skinner although he seems on pretty good form to me, I enjoy his half clever half corny puns and word play (Usher’s taking his name too literally-he was touching that coffin a bit too often).
I’ve also noticed Frankie Boyle getting his jokes out of Viz lately which is where a lot of Skinner’s probably come from as well.

reply

Frank is as funny as he ever was. He did burn his boats with both the Beeb and ITV, his sitcoms flopped so now he guests on panel shows. Its a decline in his career but he has approx £30m in the bank.
