I can't understand how anyone would assume that her health was to blame for her appearance. Obviously, this is a movie and their makeup is done for them. She is meant to look like a crazy person with her makeup and hair in bad taste. It seems to me that a lot of people want her messy appearance to be related to her health because that makes it more entertaining. Stop being so media driven people! Come on! Seriously? Use your brains, please!
No. Her husband. I was an extra on the film and I was really struck by how awful her hair looked. I couldn't see any reason for it. Her husband did hair and makeup.

Well. That explains EVERYTHING then. Dealers don't make good hairstylists- no disrespect for the dead- but they just don't.

Clearly, sorayanala got that feeling from the MANY comments about Brittany suggesting that she had an eating disorder, did drugs, etc. It seems a LOT of people actually want her "messy appearance" to be related to her health and are entertained by the fact that she looks terrible.
It's quite sad, and disgusting, in fact - that people want to relate the way she looks in this movie to whatever health conditions she may have had. In my opinion, I think she was purposely made to look the way she does in the film. Whether or not her husband, Simon, made her look ridiculous with the bad makeup and hair - I think she was purposely made to look the way she does in the film for her character's purpose..
All I know is, this film wouldn't survive without the likes of Brittany Murphy. Everyone else's acting is terrible, but her charm is what's keeping me from changing the channel.
Watched it on Lifetime this afternoon...at first was shocked at her appearance, and then it became clear it was part of the movie plot. The girl did crazy quite well, didn't she? RIP.
How DARE YOU say we are "entertained" by her tragedy. wtf is wrong with YOU.
With 20/20 hindsight.
Yes, her makeup appearance in this movie is disheveled. This is for this movie.
But, Why don't you go look at other picture of her during this time. You know, the ones that don't relate to this movie. People suspected she had an eating disorder, did drugs etc for a reason. She LOOKED like she did. Unfor, she might have been dying.
Brittany probably said "No, I want Simon to do my hair" and they obliged to keep the star of their low budget film happy. Without a name like her, this sad movie would have been even worse. Simon has no credentials in hair/makeup and they just made up a job for him so he wouldn't be lurking on set.
Yeah, her hair and eyebrows were distracting me... Her hair looked greasy and her eyebrows were some weird colors like they were dyed lighter, it had light and dark hair. I enjoyed the movie, but these two things were definitely distracting. At the end when it said "In memory of Brittany Murphy" almost made me cry. She was so talented, she could play both crazy, and comedy so well!
Just started watching this movie and I'm afraid to say that the first thing my wife and I said, from the first second we saw Brittany, was how terrible she looked. I'm sure her sorry state did add to the look of craziness and desperation as a result of her bf's disappearance, but she also looked awful in the first scene where she was supposed to be happy. She must have been ill.
I noticed that too...I was thinking maybe the make-up and hair was an attempt to make it easier to believe she was unstable and that Kevin was a delusion? I also noticed that throughout the movie without really changing her physical appearance she went from normal everyday girl to unstable/victim to strong/hero... R.I.P. Brittany Murphy :(
But Mary in the film was not in a "mental ward". She was a fairly successful businesswoman taking her boyfriend to hospital. She said she was in a mental hospital for three days while in grad school for a checkup. Judging from the age of her character that must have been some ten years ago.
As for whether her makeup was "purposefully overdone", the answer is: "perhaps partly". Her hair (mentioned by many people) did not bother me that much. The hair was what you expect from people who use hair dye but do not care to do touchup everyday (or even in days). But she definitely looked very thin (especially in the face) and definitely not in good health. She looked quite okay in the more distant shots, but looked bad when filmed harshly at certain angles and levels of lighting. For example, in her first scene with Cooper (the white-haired man), the two huge "bags" under her eyes were clearly visible.
Just FYI, people who dye their hair don't touchup their roots everyday...there's simply not enough new growth to do that everyday or even every few days. Most people touchup every few weeks depending on how quickly their hair grows.
