DeVille's rant

That was the best part of the season.

I want to see DeVille on Survivor.

reply

I like how becka was trying to back track but Deville saw through her. She so much as admitted what she meant by continuing to ask him, when she was speaking to the camera.

meg.

reply

Yes, Becca seemed very aware as to what she was doing. That part just made me say Thank You Deville!

reply

I liked when Reno said that he'd take DeVille, Sally, and George out of everyone. That was surprising to me considering it was obvious he wanted to get into Becka's pants. Sometimes a woman's beauty isn't good enough if she's completely cold, stupid, and worthless. All traits that described Becka's role in the group.

reply

I think Reno *wanted* to get in Becka's pants (real obvious during the kidnapping episodes) but by the end he had a thing for Sally.

reply

I agree... It's obvious once he got to know Becca he saw how worthless she was.

reply

I think Becka really started showing how little she's worth, when she couldn't even keep moral up. (which was somewhat her job, being as good looking as she and having no useful skills for the project. Not bashing her or anything but everyone has a part to play) Especially when the other two colonists were infected and she really POed all the other colonists with her remarks.

reply

Are you serious?!? Deville is off his rocker! His conversation with Becka was a give and take, they BOTH asked each other repeatedly if they wanted to leave. If Becka didnt care then she wouldnt have acted that way.

Deville is playing the role of angry black man ranting on a young white girl. Thats despicable!

Reno and Tick would do really well on Survivor. The rest of the colony were role players.

reply

The personality that Bekka displays is a reflection of how she feels about herself, this is all she knows so it is all she is capable of expressing.
Although it could be to do with ignorance on her part,it is very real & very sad.

reply

Wow, are you serious? That had nothing to do with race, but with ageism. Becka thought he was weak and old and should leave, so she kept asking him if he wanted to go. He was pissed, cuz he saw exactly what Becka was trying to do, and he did not want or felt like he needed to leave.

reply

Exactly, and that's why becka couldn't make up with Deville. She was embarrassed for having been seen so clearly.

reply

I actually think DeVille was really out of line with his rant... to me there was nothing more to what Becka was saying than "are you sure you don't want to leave?" (though if anything, I suspect she was thinking about going herself, but didn't want to chicken out).

I can think of many, MANY times when Becka was behaving badly, and I certainly don't disagree in principle with some of what DeVille said (even though he seemed rather unreasonably unstable when he said it!). I've criticised her quickness to leap on Tick, her bitchiness with Amber (though she herself seemed not devoid of blame) and definitely how she reacted to Amber and Michael being 'infected', so don't think I'm defending her.

But DeVille seemed to be seeing something that wasn't there. I strongly suspect he was just angry about Sian and let fly and the next person who'd irritated him a lot in The Colony (at least since the incident when A&M 'died').

On the other hand, since the whole arguement seemed pointless (and added a rather nasty, bitchy moment for many of them that I didn't feel was really needed), I also wonder if it wasn't purely included to make it seem like "everyone's falling apart" (since Jim had already gone Kurtz and Sian had abandoned everyone).

reply

No Banjo, it was there and Coupe was totally justified in what, and how, he said it. He already stated he didn't want to go and Becka just kept trying to convince him to go. He isn't stupid and he is quite capable of making up his own mind. Becka demonstrated how much faith, or lack thereof, she had in his mental stability/ability. He was a lot nicer than I would have been. I would have simply told her to stop asking me and to shut the *beep* up; I already answered her.

reply

I respect your opinion but I still don't see it. I DO see Becka has been bitchy and selfish at several points, sure, but not then. I still feel he over-reacted (on that occasion), or there was more than what we saw (I suspect he never got over Becka's foolish comments after Amber and Michael disappeared). I think DeVille was ruder than he needed to be, anyway; right or wrong, I thought he was above petty name-calling.

reply

I thought it was more in her body language then anything. The way she looked after the first couple of times she asked him. The way she was standing was one of posturing to the camera. The look on her face as he said no the third and fourth time etc. Especially when they got into the argument. Arms held back and low out to the sides - chest puffed in the air, cocked on one leg like she was going to pounce. Acting all tough and ready to scrap. That alone would anger most. She was totally disregarding everything he was saying. He as well. Although he knew she was full of crap. But her body language sealed the deal for me. If she really didn't think she was out of line, she wouldn't of postured up like that.

Like others have said, she seemed to acknowledge that she knew she was in the wrong - it was all in her body language. With a refusal to verbalize it.

The reason why I say this, I have seen all of this in her over the course of the show. I was saying from the beginning that she was young and immature and felt a need to self-posture herself as to being more mature than she was. Capable, etc. The way she started emulating Reno's walk was rather humorous. She has shown this persona with pretty much all of them on the show.

reply

She was patronizing him. That's insulting and that's what set him off.

He's a 70 year old man. He doesn't want to be talked down to by a snotty 22 year old. She lost his respect after her line about Michael and Amber not being part of the group and then she "patronizes the old man" and he was justifyibly insulted/angry.

reply

Agreed it was patronizing and even pretentious. Coupled with her body language it would anger most. She had that look to the camera like "I can't believe this old fart wants to stay" as if it was going to annoy her that he did.

reply

I totally agree about her body language. She was definitely being patronizing and even condescending. She was treating him like a child when he is more than three times her age and probably 25 times her life experience. Its like when you're leaving the house and you ask your 5 year old if they have to go to the bathroom. They say no but you ask 3 more times because you know as soon as you get out on the road, they will have to go potty.

He was offended that she was treating him as if he were incapable of making a sound decision for himself and that was one of the main points of his argument. He said something along the lines of "I'm 70 years old, if I don't know what I want by now who does?"

I think the reason why he was so harsh towards her in his rant was kinda like what some parents, especially old school ones like DeVille, would do to establish that they have senority and ultimately know better than the child. It was very paternal in my eyes, that's why he wanted to hug at the end, to show that even tho he scolded her, he still cares. And I took her rejection of that gesture as petty childish insolence, not admission of guilt.

And for those who don't realize, the reason why he kept asking her that same question every time she asked him was because he was being sarcastic and probably attempting to annoy her as much as she was annoying him.

reply

Exactly.

It clearly amazes me that there are people out there and even on here, that found Deville at fault. As if he had to take that. Or they didn't see anything wrong with Becka doing that. Truly mind blowing.

reply

I agree she was patronizing.

It was funny that DeVille got his jab in, "You were already kidnapped once."

reply

I think Amber put it best about Becka. Amber felt Becka was threatened by others and they would take her "friends" away.

It very well could have been that Becka was trying to push Deville in to leaving because she didn't want to hang around an old guy all the time. I wouldn't put the thought past Becka and honestly, that is what it seemed like she was doing.

I think Deville had had enough by the time VOPA came around and after Becka's comments about Michael and Amber.

Becka was about having a clique and Deville just didn't fit that clique for her.

You can't fake good art any more than you can fake a good meal.

reply

We can agree to disagree. The joys of a true message board.

The History Channel: Stop Thinking So Much!

reply

I agree. It's nice to be able to disagree and discuss without childish silliness; it's just a tv show, and none of really know what went on in people's heads and/or how things were edited, anyway. We can only speculate.

I actually first thought she was hoping he'd say yes, so she could say she was going too. I might be wrong, but that was the vibe I got initially... she was wanting "the old guy" to go so that she could go too, without feeling bad.

I'll see if my opinion changes when I watch it again. To be honest, I still don't think she was being insulting and that he over-reacted, but that's just me; I was honestly sad that DeVille went down in my estimation from how bitchy his rant at her seemed, even though (whether that situation justified it or not) he was right that Becka seemed to think she knew it all, but was only a 'kid' by his standards. Honestly, I wouldn't have hugged him after that either.

reply

I believe this was after Sian had already claimed one of the two seats in the VOPA truck. So assuming Becka knows how to count, she would not have been asking DeVille if he wanted to go in the hopes that he would say yes so she could say yes too. That would mean 3 people were leaving with VOPA.

reply

I know, but I wouldn't have beeen surprised if Becka was willing to argue with Sian for HER spot. Heck, if *I* wanted to leave, I would have! What gave her the right to just decide she was going and that's that?

reply

There was a distinct feeling there that she sort of wanted to go. I think she honestly wanted someone else to take the spot ahead of her so she wouldn't be tempted.

DeVille was not out of line though, she was insinuating quite a bit with the repeated questioning. Was his reaction a bit over the top? Maybe. But it was not totally out of line. And she's had a telling-off coming for quite a while.

And Sian... wow...ultimate sell-out. She couldn't say 'yes' fast enough.

reply

I agree with your first point, yes.

And I do agree that while I believe DeVille made himself look rather childish, the essence of what he said about Becka was true, and was 'owed' certainly for some of her previous actions.

I am sad though that Becka got the 'lecture' and not Sian, though... deserved or not, Sian certainly deserved a telling off MORE, IMO, for her entire time at the Colony. Becka had her good and bad moments. Sian... I can't see any good whatsoever, sorry.

reply

yea I have an issue with Sian just assuming that she could automatically get one of the two spots in the truck. Just her assuming that she can have it without discussing it with anyone else bothered me.

banjo, did you have any change of opinion after watching the scene another time? im curious if anything changed.

The History Channel: Stop Thinking So Much!

I found it insulting, and so did he, and so did most people on this board. You have to be pretty dense not to see it as insulting. If you really are this dense, I'll explain it, because it's not an opinion.

If you ask someone a question, and they give an answer, then there's no problem.
If you ask them again, and they again answer, now there's a problem, did you not hear them? Did you not believe them? If you ask three or more times, and they answer every time now you are being insulting, because you are effectively negating every answer they give you, you are calling that person a liar, because you aren't hearing the answer you want to hear.

People do that to be condescending, offensive, or controlling. It is a way to call someone a liar. That's not an opinion. If someone answers, and then you ask again multiple times, you have presented a situation where their answers are not good enough for you. There's no other explanation.

reply

All he did was prove her point for her
She suggested that he was old and weak and had had enough of the experiment
And she was RIGHT
Clearly the way he reacted to her was proof that the guy wasn't all there.
His rant made absolutely no sense. He made up words that didn't make sense. He called her names that also had no point and relevance to the conversation. He speaks in a way thats barely understandable.
The guy is an alzheimer's case with some carpentry skills.

reply

balba, Really? We're gonna make it a racial thing. Really.

Deville's rant was justified. She was obviously trying to bait him into leaving.

Sally was definitely more than a role player. So were Amber and Michael.

reply

You're wrong - she was being condescending and rude and he tried to push back the second time by flat out telling her - he doesn't want to, he feels safer where he was and that she's free to join VOPA.

I still think she's s plant because even at 22 she can't possibly be as lazy, stupid, and worthless as she appeared.

Make her night watch everynight and assistant cook and house cleaner ... honestly, she needed to contribute something to the group.

And for the umpteenth time she is NOT that pretty or cute, she's okay ... does anyone who gets into a catalogue or locally weekly advertisement wearing a bikini count as a MODEL. I remember Rob Kardashian got ONE assignment and you know that entire family owes everything to Kim's sex tape and the attention she drew to that disfunctional crew. Model and 'would be photographer' are all code words for ... I got nothing ...

reply

"Good for you, Coupe. Don't take no bleep." Even Reno saw how absurd her behavior was.

Then she runs off to Sally to tell instead of handling her own business.

"Self-indulgent, over-glorified ass..." Ha-ha.

reply

I was surprised by Reno's remark as well. Everyone saw her for what she was in the end. Moral of the story: supermodels are worthless.

reply

i can think of plenty of uses for her

It's understanding that allows people like me to tolerate people like you

reply

Coupe's all stocked up in the balls department. I was waiting for someone to tell her "Your 22 years old, you don't know sh**".

reply

Coop rules!!!! Only thing that could have made it better was if he had Sally in his corner...being all like, "NA AH!!! YOU AIN'T TALKING TO MR. DEVILLE LIKE THAT!!!!" and proceeded to b!tch slap that worthless tw@t across the bayou. But not before they both tore each others clothes completely off. Sarah and Becka, that is.

reply

That's 'Coupe', as in Coupe De Ville, his nickname from the Cadillac.
