72 hours to live in season 2

Amber and Michael get infected. According to the scenario, they are going to be dead in 72 hours. In the show, they are forced to leave almost immediately.

I think they should have been allowed to live those 3 days out. The episode immediately after they are "dead", the colonists finally locate the maurader's camp and go on the offensive by attacking it. If this was real life, would your final sacrifice be to infect as many of their opponents as possible?
