Sexist and racist piece of garbage

Anyone else wonder why all of the female characters are either strippers, prostitutes, want to sleep with the main character, or are simply nagging wenches. Or why all minorities other than the one token black friend are either pimps or janitors. Wasn't a terrible film, but the underlying message was infuriating and idiotic. Feels like it was written by a smarmy white film school student whining about having to take a job that isn't perfect, completely ignorant to those unable to get any job, much less a well paid one.

Think I'm being too harsh. This is only a fraction of my frustration. Read the rest in my full review.

I do not disagree with you in general but I think disregarding the characters in general for being a pimp, stripper or janitor is little unfair. They had important plot points.

The janitor was a good friend to Will Davis, was also philosophical and a visionary at times. So was the pimp. The stripper also acted as a career counselor and her insights I think made her presence more important. The inappropriate colleague I think was made so to show how unfulfilling her job was. The film seemed to convey a message, like do what makes you happy etc and all these apparently insignificant characters show that people are more than what they appear to be.

The girl from the coffee shop was a good friend of Roger's, so the portrayal was not all negative.

But having said all these, I still think that the way racism and sexism is ingrained in the society, even with conscious efforts to avoid them, evidences of structural discrimination and exploitation creep in, no matter what!

There is no racism or sexism ingrained in society, and the movie wasn't racist or sexist.

If you want to personally pretend like a handful of sexists or racists means society trains you to be sexist or racist, go right ahead. Just don't expect people to take you seriously when you share those views with them.

I envy the your social circle, and I'll greatly appreciate it if you could kindly paint me a picture of this unprejudiced society that you live in, you know the one without racism and sexism.

There's a difference between saying "There isn't racism and sexism, period", and there isn't racism or sexism built into society.

To support your claim, you'd need to determine that most people are raised to be sexist or racist, but that's impossible to prove and so statistically unlikely as to be dismissed outright.

You also mention "structural discrimination", but nobody who ever talks about systemic or institutional or structural anything can provide anything resembling proof. A handful of instances don't count to make your case.

Err.. what else would they be unless the guy was gay ...

I love it when PC Fascist like yourself open their mouths and reveal to the world how truly idiotic they and their views are ..

So only women in your lives are strippers, prostitutes or just people who wants to have sex? You don't have friends or family? What was the point of your statement?

English is not my first language, so please excuse any mistakes.

reply

I know plenty of women who are not strippers, prostitutes or just want to have sex .. but I don't see why they would/should be in this movie?? What is the point of your statement?? :)

I don't think you seem to harsh. I couldn't get through even half of this movie before I turned it off, I have better things to do than watch sexist, racist, classist(?) crap like this. The writers and everyone involved in making it should be embarassed to have their names atttached to it, really. It's completely void of good sense, intellect and wit.

You said everything that was in my head this film is terrible I'll tell my friends to avoid it at all costs

I didn't think that the movie was sexist or racist, but it was garbage. I'm in my 30s and it took me a while to find a job that was worthwhile and something that I could feel passionate about, it's out there and I understand that the film wanted to end a message of hope but I just found the majority of characters to be somewhat unbelievable and couldn't relate with the them.

The biggest let down would have had to have been the ending though. Bryan Cranston's character, I honestly thought that he would have found a second life inside of that coffee shop and could have gotten an opportunity from that manager.
