The Horror of Damaris

The very embodiment of 21st-century line-toeing, target-obsessed beaming insincerity that's neutering human relationships in the workplace. She must have the most acute faceache when she goes to bed at night (if indeed she does - maybe she stands up in a wardrobe all night, al la The Cabinet of Dr Caligari). Once asleep, how much do you want to bet she dreams of having a sincere smile? If they still made Carry On films, they'd never be able to set them in hospitals any more - Carry On Modern Matron indeed!

But I felt the same way of all the nurses and even the doctor. Remember the scene when Kim takes the salad to the woman who dies? The daughter is inside the curtained bed looking at her dead mother and right outside Den is asking Kim to save the salad for her.

But moments prior, she's all sad and comforting to the woman whose mother has just died.

The thing is this show made me so really think about the fake concern showed by people in the medical industry. LOL

It's a shock to the system when you realize these people don't even give a damn.

One of the characters is Damaris. She's in series 2 as a nursing student. She annoys Kim and Den by being a creep and by talking the language of the new culture in the health service - and she's due to get a degree in nursing, something which wasn't expected in Den and Kim's day. That's why she reappears in series 3 as their superior! And what a hairstyle. You witness her patronising staff and patients alike, and you see her unthinkingly "cascading" directives from her own superiors down to her staff, using the terminology of management-speak everybody detests so much.

I work in the health service, and there's a lot of truth in Damaris' character. Hence the original post.

The difference with Kim and Den is that they have been made world weary and cynical by the job, but it's possible there IS a germ of genuine sympathy in them, whereas Damaris is no better than a robot, spouting corporate soundbites, even introducing herself as "Modern Matron". I work with people like that, the government and every public body is staffed by people like that, and they are the curse of the 21st Century.

Also enjoyed Megan the union rep, one of the funniest jobs-worths to appear in a sit-com for a long time.

I know exactly what you are saying. Damaris is so much like an American nurse and that's probably why I like her. I don't find her to be robot-like or insincere. She is what is rather nauseatingly called a people-pleaser, I guess you would say. When I encounter nurses here in America or other healthcare workers, I will take a Damaris over a Kim in a heartbeat.

Poor Damaah-ris.
She does a hard job very well, is intelligent, polite, and well-intentioned. There really is nothing you could put on a complaint form about her. But oh, the horror. The horror of Damma-ris.

Sorry, Damn-maurice.
