this is a high quality, low budget "revenge thriller." i have to say that i was certainly skeptical about its merits when i tuned into watch it on cable late one friday night. it was quite surprising...especially the end.
"karma" (the lead female character), in fact, is surprising in a lot of ways.
if american television could be so bold, ingenious and original, i could imagine some tv exec getting their hands on this material and turning it into a franchise (l.o.l.)
Actually it wasn't a remake of Ms. 45 despite the mute similarity and vengence aspect. Ms. 45 was straight up revenge flick and quite low budget. This movie was more specifically about human trafficking and her personal dilemma.
My feeling is that this mov was marketed the wrong way. People probably thought it was a stright up revenge B movie, and the fact that it actually has a real plot, psychological elements, moral questions, etc. was probably overlooked entirely. Too bad, thsi really was a good movie.
I picked the movie out of Netflix for pure cheap thrills - hot girl doing the revenge thing sounds like a great way to waste 90 minutes. I was VERY pleasantly surprised at the film.
I won't claim this to be some work of art, but there were a few aspects I really liked:
- The protagonist being mute forced the other characters to act better and for the story to speak for itself. No bad dialogue/ one liners, which was nice.
- The "what I am doing is not who I am" angle was cool - Karma had to wrestle with her own morals as she continued through the movie (like when she threw up after her first killing)
- The slave trafficing angle was broader than I expect, giving a more robust tale to tell. The concept of signing up for housecleaning and then bening forced into something much worse is quite horrific.
More to say, but in short this movie is much better than it's presented. It does itself a disservice by having a half naked bloody girl on the box cover - but it worked for getting my attention!
