What was the point of the shopkeeper bringing up New Eden? *spoilers*

The shop keeper of the first town they visit mentions that someone came through town from New Eden and that he mentioned that it was inhabited by cannibals and there was no food there. Maybe I just missed something but this is never discussed by anyone. I actually like that the movie didn't spell every little detail out for the audience, but this seems like a huge issue that absolutely needed some screen time. Wouldn't Martin mention the cannibals to Mister? This is where they're supposed to live. Isn't that worth a short conversation? Even if they dismiss it and keep going, I don't see the point of including it in the movie if Martin and Mister aren't going to talk about how that could impact their plans.

Did they discuss it and I just missed it or forgot it somehow? It bothered me throughout the whole movie that the place they were headed is infested with cannibals and it had never been discussed. Otherwise I really liked the movie.

You didn't miss anything. Nothing ever came of that line. It foreshadowed an ending that didn't happen. It's possible the writer/director intended the dialogue to evoke a sense of hopelessness, making the viewer know nowhere is truly safe.

But other than that, it serves no purpose that I can discern. I half wonder if the script called for the characters or reach New Eden at some point but they changed it for time or budget reasons. Who knows?

Had the shop keeper been there? He was basically just passing along "possible" gossip he heard.
