Very Impressive!
To think I scoffed at all of the incredibly rave reviews and went into this film thinking it was just another ruse to entice people to fork out their cash for inferior goods, as it is somewhat of a common practice on this site. So set the reviews aside and read my unbiased opinion of the film.
So this is where I have come(as usual) to tell potential viewers who, like me, were/are skeptical after their first glance at this film and reviews for "The Last House" aka "House of Last Things", that this film is the real deal. Not just the real deal, but dare I say this is Michael Bartlett's masterpiece, it's a film which has been so finely tuned by this writer/director, likely over the many years since his last effort in 1998 the German film "The Little Girl Who Fell from the Tree"(I never heard of it either, but I've now added it to my WL). He has taken notice in the styles of many of the greats, like Lynch, Hitchcock and I especially felt a familiarity to Kubrick's "The Shining", and revisioned it into his own unique perspective. It is a bit exhausting to watch as the story slowly bores through your brain like that of a worm through the apple, but worth every bit imo. What it lacks in budget, it makes up for in style, with many subtle visual touches that weave through past and present, creating an uneasy and sort of supernatural atmosphere. Though heads up, it's a very cerebral film so if you like the kind of film where a bathroom break or a snack run won't ruin continuity then you should consider moving on. Or if you love a smart, well written indie thriller that leaves you guessing, then I highly recommend catching this if you can. 8.7/10
