Great game

Haven't beat it yet though.

You think, therefore I am.

reply

I have, thought the game was brilliant. I loved the "draw" shootouts you could have as well, which were much better executed than the first ones.
Graphics are top notch as well and I can't believe how well it runs.

Playing the original now seeing as how I got bored at the start with the stealth missions.

reply

Haha, yeah, I beat the game shortly after I posted, definitely great story, graphics and gameplay, multiplayer's really good too. I'm about to start playing the first one as well since the story takes place after number two, should be a little more interesting this time around since I know the backstory.

You think, therefore I am.

reply

Come on, bad cover system. Terrible AI, linear and standard level design.

And you say the game is "great"?

Got to be one of the worst western games made so far.
Yeah the story was "interesting"...but this is a game, not a movie.

I like the game, no problems with it whatsoever, that's my opinion on it, deal with it.

reply

that's my opinion on it, deal with it.

And my opinion is that it's not "great" at all.

Let's get into more details here...

Cover system.

1, It's automatic. You get close to an object, wall, etc and it snaps into the cover mode whether you want to or not. Leaving you open to being shot from an angle you do not wat to be in as your character just snaps into possition if they get close to an object. This is a MAJOR failing, why not CHOOSE to be in cover with a quick press of a button?

2, Why the hell do the controls suddenly reverse ONLY when in cover mode that you have no choice of getting in? Left = left. Right= right. Up = up and down = down. Fine, great that is how it should be and that is what you are used to. Using guns, fine, riding horses, fine using the gatling gun, fine...but as soon as you are snapped into the cover system (that you have not chosen to be in) the controls reverse, up is now down. Left is now right, etc. So you can be turning left to look around when as you turn there is a box there and you go into cover mode (that you do not want to be in but have no choice) and suddently you are turning the opposite way you want to be. WHY? Keep the controls the SAME no matter if you are in cover or not. Why do the controls reverse at all and ONLY on the cover system but not anything else?

3, As you have no choice and suddenly snap into cover mode, whether you want to be or not. this can leave you open to attacks you are trying to avoid in the first place. Throw in the reverse controls, so you snap into cover made with no warning you don't want to be in...then the controls revrse while getting shot at...you are in trouble.

Terrible and flawed cover system which makes the game fail in this area.
A Wild West game with copious shootouts would need a GOOD cover system.

AI.

1, They have no AI, even on the hardset difficulty setting, bad guys stand in open land in the middle of a gunfight...maybe they are trying to avoid the crap cover system?

2, The standing out in the open does not just apply to bad guys. The ammount of times I have "falied" a mission due to the fact my brother(s) have died cos they stand there when being hailed by 100's of bullets is stupid. I "fail" cos they are idiots? Even worse, you have no contol over your brother(s) so if they are just standing there getting shot...you are the one that suffers, cos they have no AI. So YOU the player is punished for the poor programming of the game's developers.

Some of the worst AI I have witnessed in a game, for me a game 's AI is VERY important as this is what makes the game playable or unplayable.

Level desgin.

1, Restrictive. The levels are so damn linear you could get around them blindfolded. Do I want a massive open world Wild West game? Yes...but that does not mean it HAS to be this way to be good. There is a happy medium between open levels and linear...this game does not have it.

2, Empty levels. So you walk into a town and go into a saloon. It it like the movies with people standing around drinking, playing cards, etc? No, there is no one around. The towns are empty with no life...yet they are CLEARLY lived in by the scenery with shops, etc. Ok out in the desert I expect it to be empty...but not in a living town. Ok sometimes you may bump into 1 person in a house....1 person in a whole town? So if they have included some NPCs in the towns...why not more of them to make the towns seem lived in, instead of the towns being so sparse? Go play the first game, the very first mission when you get to the town, what is it like? People walking around some you even talk to. Go into the Saloon what do you see, a bar man serving drinks, guys sitting around playing cards, etc. If they made the towns lived in and populated in the first game...why not in the sequel?

3, Add the two previous elements together and you have dull, lifeless, empty, restictive levels. No imagination, nothing like "the wild west". They had so much scope to deliver such a rich and intersting game world...but they failed.

4, Those 2 sections where you get freedom. Now there are 2 points in the game where you do get complete freedom to explore and even take on side quests (only 6 though). Wow, you can explore, you can jump on a horse and go wherever you wish. There are places of interest to find, little houses, hideouts, clifs to climb and explore, etc. There are even (almost) random encounters with people being attacked where you can help out if you wish. Why was the WHOLE game not like this? Freedom and open levels to explore but without being too open. This is that happy medium between a massive open world and linear levels the ballance is PERFECT on these 2 sections. This is what the whole game should have been like. The thing that gets to me about these parts being so damn good is the fact they are not important to the game at all. You can play through the entire game and NOT do anything during these 2 sections except move onto the next "real" mission. The 2 best parts of the game are not actually part of the "game" at all.

The levels are just so damn dull, you can fall alseep playing. There is NOTHING to do other than get from A-B and shoot bad guys with bad AI while getting into a cover system you don't want to be in while the controls reverse for no reason and going into towns that have nothing to see or do in them.

It's supposed to be a Wild West game...it was known as the WILD West for a reason. It was not called the "very dull and lifeless west".

Are the graphics good? Yes...but I don't play games for graphics, I play them to ENJOY the playing.
Is the story good? Sometimes I have to admit yes it is. But again, I don't play games for story, I play them to ENJOY the playing.

Is it a "great" game?
Oh hell no.
It's a medicore game that had great potential. A major step backward from the first game with an unwanted, unreliable cover system, poor AI and empty, lifeless levels.
That's my opinion..."deal with it".

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he is God.

You only really have 2 points there and you're just repeating them over and over.

Nope. 3 points (1. cover system, 2. bad AI, 3. dull levels...definetly 3 there), but going into details why those 3 points are the main ones.
It's better then just saying "it's got a crap cover system", at least I gave reasons and details as to why it's a crap cover system. Sometimes 1 failing has more than 1 reason behind it.

Anytime i find myself in cover when i don't want to be i just nudge down on the left stick and he steps away from cover.

I agree that it is "easy" to correct...but the point is you should not need to correct it in the first place. You should be able to CHOOSE to be in cover or not, not have it be automatic.
Also, the harder the difficulty you play it on (and I enjoy playing on hard) the more apparant the problems become. Go play it on the hardest difficulty and then tell me the cover system is not that bad. When you are getting shot and killed as you ar ein a cover system you DON'T wan tto be in...you'll then see my point.

The towns could use some more NPCs but what bothers me more than the lack of people is the inability to kill the people that are there

It's not the killing (or lack of it) that bothers me, it's the lack of any life in the towns. The levels are just dull.

you complain that all you do in this game is shoot people? It's a fisrt person shooter, what did you expect?

No, it's a FPS set in the wild west. Where are all the wild west-esque ideas? Why can't you go into a bar and have a classic saloon fight? Why can't you pop upstairs and "visit" Miss Kitty? Why can't you sit around and play cards?
Also...it's a wild west game. Where are the train robberies, where are the bandits and random gun slingers?
It's not that it's a FPS where you just shoot, it's the fact it's a FPS set in the wild west...that is not wild or has a western feel.
It's not just a FPS, it's a dull FPS.
Halflife is just a FPS, but it had imagination, variation, interest and ideas in it. This game has nothing other than just shooting bad AI controlled characters in dull and empty levels.

i think you played this expecting the wrong kind of game

Indeed I was, I was expecting a GOOD game.

wait for red dead redemption to come out

I do think RDR looks great...but as I also already pointed out. A wild west game does not NEED to be a massive open world game at all. There is a happy medium between that style of game and something more linear. (this game even had that int he 2 bits of freedom you do have)
I have no problem with a game that is linear...as long as it's good. This game fails in it's level desgin which is dull and lifeless, it fails in it's broken cover system which DOES ruin the game at certain points, and it does fail in it's terrible AI.
This game had so many set ups where they COULD have included ideas and some imagination...but they didn't. They left it a dull and empty game.
Graphics, story, yeah they are good...but so what?
I play games for the enjoyment of PLAYING them, not looking at them.
AI, terrible controls, bland levels...these are the kind of things that make a game good or bad...not it's graphics or story.

You know, you could always turn the cover system off.

I just completed the game, the duels are great, u could buy weapons for each character and the story isnt boring. I'll give it a 7.5/10
It would have been better if the enemy react defferently if u shoot him in defferent places"knee,shoulders.."

Hey McClane, J McClane...

Maybe this game didn't appeal to you because you were naff at it?! Train robberies? What does that have to do with the story? Did you even pay attention to the story? You know you can turn the cover system off? Did you know that?!!

You didn't?!
Well gaaalleeeeeee....

The cover system works fine, for me anyway. Maybe thats because I know how to work it properly
The AI is one of the strongest I've seen, in fact I had a lot of confidence in my AI controlled bro throughout the game!

Now I think this is an absolutely breathtaking game to look at. The music is amazing and the voice acting is solid. The story is well thought out and leads straight into the first game.

If you wanna wander around aimlessly for 2 hours not doing very much, occasionally happening upon something *slightly* interesting go play Fallout 3.

Now THAT is a dull, mind-numbing game!!

the only bad thing really is the awkward cut scenes, where the characters eyes are all over the place... and the younger brother is pretty annoying at times..but it is a good game
