Silly popcorn flick

I'd pair this with national treasure, armageddon, and Independence day. It's fun, silly and ridiculous.

It will probably be forgotten in a year.

As opposed to a serious popcorn flick?

Popcorn and serious do not go together.

reply

They can, but your biggest popcorn purchases come with average fun movies.

NOTICE HOW WE HAVE IN FACT NOT FORGOTTEN THOSE FILMS.

reply

True. We'll see what happens with this. I remember my uncle saying no p e would remember men in black.

The biggest hindrance to this is that it is awash in cgi adventure movies.

Magellan didn't accumulate a treasure. He died on his trip around the world, and only 1 of his 5 ships made it. 1 mutinied and went back to Spain from South America, one sank, one was burned by Magellan since he didn't have enough crew members left to sail it, and one was captured by Portugal.

The first man to sail around the world was actually Juan Sebastian Elcano, a Basque mariner from Spain, who was the highest ranking officer on Magellan's fleet to return home alive.

Even with just one ship making it back, the trip was still profitable for Spain, since one shipload of spices had enormous value then (enough to pay for the whole fleet and everyone's pay). Cloves and cinnamon and pepper aren't so valuable now.

Read "Over the Edge of the World" by Laurence Bergreen to get the whole story you didn't learn in school. This September (2022) is the 500th anniversary of the completion of the voyage. It would make a great movie.

I need a good read. Thanks for the recommendation.

I enjoyed it better than expected. A proper Uncharted adaptation could had been the next "Raiders of the Lost Ark" w/o question. But this was surprisingly enjoyable.

reply

Except Independence Day and National Treasure were fun.

This was one of a string of recent dumb movies, not worth the popcorn.

At least they gave credit to Elcano for being the first man to sail around the world.

reply

Those other movies were far better.

This did well enough at the box office that it will most likely get multiple sequels.

reply

You're probably right.
