I was confused since I didn't realize it was not chronological to begin with. So I was pretty confused about what happened with his wife.
I love WKW but I wish that the narrative was more accessible here.
I agree with you 100%. It was a beautiful picture, but I was very very confused about the flashbacks and flashforwards and thought he had married Gong Er and she died and then she shows up.
shareFrom what I saw in the movie, after the communist party took over mainland China, IP man is trapped in HK and his wife is trapped in mainland. I can only imagine with a family background like hers she would have a hard life and death during that era.
shareThat's what you saw in the movie, but it's not the truth. After the war he went back to his regular occupation - policeman - and had to flee to Hong Kong in 1949 because he was Kuomintang, which was the opposite party to the Communists.
The movie glosses over all this, making it appear that he was wealthy and lived in the lap of luxury. But what happened is that he ran, leaving his wife and sons in Foshan.
