What happened to this game?

I remember reading a Game Informer about 4 years ago that stated that this game was going to take place in an open world version of Washington DC and, that if the police/guards were chasing you through the city, you would be able to break into a clothing store and steal overalls, mess your hair up, and they'd give up the search.

Does anyone else recall this?

also...

Is anybody else angry about 5 lousy hours of single-player gameplay? (and yes, I do know about the added value of co-op multiplayer and "protect the EMP" mode)

Beware, the One Armed Race is coming for you.

I think that's all in the original concept of Splinter Cell: Conviction that was supposed to be released in 2007

I think the two big reasons it changed was because they got a negative response from the fans saying it broke away from the SC stealth we know and love. Second was because the gameplay was very similar to Assassin's Creed at the time (I'm not sure about this reason).

And who said it was 5-hour single player gameplay? The makers even said it'll take around 12 hours to finish. Don't believe me...

IGN review states that if you run through the single-player story it will take approximately 5 hours.

Don't believe me... (sorry, had to do it)

I stand corrected. But I've never been bothered by how long or short the gameplay is. Also, after hearing the review by IGN, I have a feeling this'll be the best SC game yet so I won't care. Just 3 days people!

Eh, I figure if I could finish Modern Warfare 2 in around the same time and STILL enjoy it multiple times despite the godawful bloated storyline, then I can have a lot of fun with SCC. Plus I'm excited about split-screen - my friend and I have played almost every Splinter Cell co-op campaign to date, and this one looks to be the best.
Oh, and Deniable Ops mode is also single player on most modes, and that also includes the Persistent Elite Creation, which could considerably lengthen the game time, like the challenges in Arkham Asylum.

I really don't know what the hell all these reviewers are smoking... I played it on realistic and in my first play through it took me at least 11 hours to finish.

I have also noticed some other reviewers wonder the same thing, they too were thinking the others put the game on easy then played it Gears of War style or something.

Also the game was never an open world setting, not even the old build. The maps were and are sandbox style maps meaning multiple pathways and multiple infiltration methods.

5 hours? In realistic difficulty setting the Third Echelon HQ and Lincoln Memorial alone will take about 3 hours to complete. I have no complaints above the game. SAM has gone rogue and is longer bound by rules. He is free to "cut their throats and look for the words inside their necks"(as he says to Nedich in Chaos Theory).

My only complaint is that I get a Blue Screen of Death each and every time I exit the game to return to the Windows Desktop and absolutely no one can seem to help me fix it.
