While Paul had been lied to, it was still a crapshoot that any of the buried hostages would be found in time. Of course, this presumes Mark was buried around the same time as Paul, so there would've been enough air until his rescue.

I thought the OP of course knew the arguments for and against, but just couldn't decide.
Of course White was dead. DUH. He had been in for three weeks. We know that Ryan had only enough air and water for a certain length of time, and then would die, if the kidnappers didn't kill him first.
So White would be dead. That also explains the phone guy's sad tone when he tells Ryan it's Mark White. It's Mark White, who is dead...not "It's White...thank God we found him...don't give up, we'll find you, too." Everyone knew that Ryan couldn't survive weeks to be found.
But I can see how a viewer might hold out hope, since they don't say outright that White is dead.
Why are you attacking him for his comment? It is absolutely, 100% clear from the film that White is dead. Stating the obvious is not stupid.
