The HR Guy - Come on!!

I know we're supposed to believe all military contractors are eeeeeeeevil corporations with super duper eeeeeeevil people working there. But they're not run by imbeciles. No way any company would do that phone exit interview nor deny the family insurance money. The bad PR would cost them 100X more than the insurance payout. And besides that company wouldn't pay the insurance money anyway. They buy insurance contracts on their employees, covered by a 3rd party insurance company. Which makes it doubly stupid to risk the bad PR when your insurance company is on the hook for the money.

That was just a stupid scene in an otherwise pretty good movie.

Obviously, it's absurd. But that scene was there for comic relief. Hey, you can't keep the tension up for 90 minutes without some kind of break.

reply

That was NOT comic relief.

I have worked in HR a lot, but I don't know what the protocols would be for this situation.

A sleazy company might very well try this, but it may not hold up in court, or under scrutiny.

In 1989 I was working for a sleazy leasing company. My dad had been sick for 3 years, and the end was near, everyone knew. Side note, the company had no bereavement policy or funeral leave.

So it happened, and I came back to work 4 days after the funeral. The new bereavement and funeral policies were announced the day I got back. I asked if they were retroactive, I was told no, as my father's death happened before the policy was implemented.

Of course, they had waited for him to die, and for me to return to work, before that.

Gee Woodle, Space Kadoodle!

Agreed. And that part was NOT comic relief. The writer added that just to punch the audience in the gut and it comes across as over the top. It's a good movie, but that should have been cut out of it.
