jean marc - jack kerouac

Jean Marc gave an excellent performance as the tortured writer whom through the years of reading and learning about his life, has captured the essence and even mannerism of Jack himself come to life.
Ok the wig/toupee is a bit of a life on its own in itself but damn it he looked the part and played it very well.
The visuals/scenery was stunning just like it was depicted in the book and couldn't ask for more. That was right on spot that you sometimes forget the story or the movie itself that you just want to sit back relax and enjoy it.
I think this was more an accurate translation from book to film than On The Road but that's a another story.
With what little material the director had from the book I'd say job well done!

What about glaring age disparity?

The Kerouac character in the story was supposed to be "nearing 40", while Jean Marc Barr was 52 when the film was made, and he looked every bit 52.

According to what I read, Kerouac was 47 going on 60. He was ravaged by drink. This: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JL9UiOuZmKw/T1Dql9XFRpI/AAAAAAAACOw/DOKVb9mb ZBc/s1600/pf45413-1.jpg supposedly shows Jack in 1957, when he would have been only 35. He looks quite a bit older than 35 to me. When Big Sur was published Jack was 40, so he would have looked at least as old as the 1957 photo shows. I think Barr was perfect as Kerouac.

By the way, for what it's worth, Big Sur has the worst film editing I've ever seen in a feature film.

Not worth anything.

I totally agree with you - this guy was Kerouac.

I haven't seen any archive video of Kerouac, just pictures, and Barr looked just like him, and his mannerisms matched my expectations.

I agree about the movie also. I haven't seen On the Road yet - don't know if I'll ever get around to it. But I enjoyed how in this, they mixed in a lot of the actual text of the book along with the film. It was crazy, haphazard, high, and then low - but that was how Kerouac was.

I'm glad that I stumbled upon this on Netflix.
