My discouragement with these kinds of movies ...

This is a personal taste thing, so while I'm interested in alternative perspectives, I'm not trying to persuade or be persuaded.

When I read a book I have no trouble visualizing what I'm reading, especially when the book is written by someone as talented as Kerouac. He's pretty descriptive of people's behavior, physical traits and the world they inhabit. When I see s movie based on a book I want to see the story, as interpreted by the film makers, that inspired the book. What I don't want is to hear the book read to me, accompanied by images I already thought up when I read it in the first place. This movie spends the first fourteen minutes putting action to VO straight from the book. I recognize that dialogue from the book will make it into the script, but don't just read me the book and show stuff happening. The movie ends the same way and is heavily sprinkled throughout with narration.

I understand that there is a ton of inner dialogue in the book and many passages where there's only exposition, but Bambi was a book, too, and they made a terrific film out of that without any narration. The rule of film is show-don't-tell, and that doesn't need to change just because the source material is literary. If you want to make a movie out of a book then turn the book into a movie. Don't just make it a moving picture book.
