How did the family know Tom's name?

Tom wakes up as the daughter Alicia is tending to his wounds. He freaks out and scares her off, then her father Willy comes in, talks to Tom for a few minutes and tells him to clean up because dinner will be ready soon. Tom shaves, goes downstairs, sits at the table, Willy says grace and says "Thank you for our new friend Tom." Except that Tom never introduced himself and it seems unlikely that even if he talked in his sleep, he would say his own name. While it's true that we didn't see every second from the moment Willy left to when Tom went downstairs, it seemed like they were showing all the important bits of him meeting the family, so it doesn't seem like they would leave out such an important scene.

When Willy said his name, Tom looked up like he realized that something was wrong, but he never said anything.

All along, I was thinking it was another alien trick. Either virtual reality or that the family were working for the Espheni, but yet the arrival of Hal and his new friend seems to indicate that it was all real.

Was it just a goof by the writers, or is something else going on?

He is quite famous.

Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. ...Come watch TV?

Of course, they know him.. he's the President of The United States.. or maybe he isn't.. did they ever address that?

That one woman took over after Tom.

reply

He was President of Georgia. The actual President of the U.S. was still alive at the time.

They checked his wallet and saw his driver's license... duh.

Yeah, I noticed that. Then I started think of all the possibilities of why. Is he dreaming, is he in some holodeck prison scenario, are the aliens putting thoughts in his head?

Then I realized, *beep* im watching falling skies and chalked it up to a writing screw up.....and sure enough....

Yep. I saw it too, but at this point, all the moronic crap that happens can just be chalked up to incompetent writers.

So you want everything to connect and neatly tied with a bow? Come on, this is Falling Skies. They have never tied things together. If there is any possible way that something could have happened, you are to go with that. If it wasn't possible, then the aliens made it possible some way, some how.

It was a writing error and will eventually show up as a "goof" for this episode.

I thought he introduced himself to the old man.

reply

He did not. I just rewatched it to be sure. Tom never once mentioned his name.

The hornet picking him up was weird too, that coupled with him waking up in the house led me to believe it was going to be another hallucination by the aliens.

reply

That's what I thought also and I have a feeling that's what the writers wanted us to think.

Or the old farmer was used to calling stray male cats Toms, so he just used that. lol
