Not everything would have been turned on when the aliens used their EMP thing..
Surely there was some electronics that was not activated at the time that still works. They couldn't have done that much damage. Or did they just get very lucky?
Considering how dependent we are on technology an EMP would be the most effective way to cripple most of the world without risk of rendering it uninhabitable. Computers in military/defense departments and large banks or other corporations are rarely all off at once and on-site backups are on unless they are being worked on. Power plants and phone companies are dependent on technology; cell towers are always on. Once worldwide communications are down people would panic; violence and riots would be out of control for weeks or even months. Alien attackers wouldn't even have to kill many people after the first attack. We would kill each other but you would also have hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of people dying from illnesses that can't really be treated without the right equipment such as dialysis. Think of all the people that are saved daily by what is considered routine surgery now, like appendicitis. Accidental injuries that would normally be easily treated could easily kill. Complications in childbirth, premature birth, and ectopic pregnancies would be deadly. Sure, some doctors would be around, but they would be so impossibly overloaded people would die waiting for treatment. Technology is a wonderful thing, but as a whole society has become far too dependent on it.
